Collections and information retrieval

The library acquires both electronic and print resources to its collections mainly in the disciplines researched and taught at the university. The collections hold research literature, course books, periodicals, academic theses, databases, reference books, electronic publications and selected open access resources. You can search for both print and electronic resources in the UEF Primo. More information on the Library collections on the public webpages.

Library organises a course Research Information Retrieval and Management targeted to doctoral researchers. It introduces the most important subject-specific scholarly information sources and gives basic skills in systematic information retrieval.

Data protection and processing of personal data

If your research data includes any personal data, the requirements of the GDPR are applied in processing of it. The purpose of data protection is to define when and on what conditions personal data can be processed. More information:

  • Data protection in research  (in Heimo, requires UEF login)
  • Data protection guidelines for students who process personal data in their thesis

UEF Staff must take and pass an online training module in information security and data protection every third year (requires UEF login).

Data management

UEF Library organises a course Basics of research data management (1 ECTS) for doctoral researchers. The Library also offers guidance and support for research data management (e.g. creating data management plan) in different phases of research.

Information security

Research data and other recorded information can be divided into three categories based on the document secrecy and the general right of access: high protection level, base protection level, and public information. For saving and storing research data, IT Services provides disk space with backup (50 GB) and without backup (2 TB) as well as REDCap-data management services. Learn more about information security, information security instructions, and information security rules in Heimo (requires UEF login).

Methods of research and statistics

Finnish Social Science Data Archive has published Research Methods Guidebook. Links to self-learning materials on selection of research methods can be found on the Library webpages.

Courses in statistics may be included in the doctoral degree if they comply with the study requirements. You can also select individual courses e.g. online courses in using tools R and SPSS (please, check the prerequisites before registering).

In Statistics, consultation is offered on matters of statistical methods and their rightful use to researchers who have acquired the basic knowledge of the Statistics studies equal to the first year studies at UEF, and whose own mentor is unable to help them on the matter. More information about the courses and consultation services on SPSS and statistics– page in Kamu.

Scientific writing

Language Centre offers education for doctoral researchers on scientific writing: English for Doctoral Students (4 ECTS).

Publishing and submitting publications to SoleCRIS

The Library provides guidance e.g. on selecting publishing channels, applying for support for article processing charges granted by the university or publishers, and copyright matters.

The library maintains the UEF eRepository (eRepo), an open access materials repository, that contains theses and publications of the University of Eastern Finland, self-archived versions of articles and metadata of research data made available by our researchers.

The Library also records publication data in the UEF SoleCRIS Current Research Information System. Once your scientific article has been published, please, submit it to research database SoleCRIS and (if you like) for self archiving in eRepo by using Publication information- form.

Open science

The objective of UEF publishing and data policy is to ensure that research data produced with public financing is broadly utilisable for the scientific community and the society at large. This requires the methods, results, data and publications of a research study to be opened. More information about open science and open publishing on Library’s webpages.

The Library organises a course on Basics of Open and Responsible Science (2 ECTS) for the Doctoral School. It provides basic information on the topic.

Research Funding Services

Research Funding Services help in the preparation of funding proposals on research, development and educational activities, help and support in the project management and, organize info sessions and training on the acquisition of external funding. More information about Research Funding Services in Heimo (requires UEF login).

Useful links

Research-related University’s instructions and procedures and other useful links supporting research can be found in Heimo (requires UEF login).
