Practical training
Practical training during your studies is an excellent way to put what you have learned into practice, develop your professional skills, clarify your career plans and build networks with professionals in your field. Work experience in your own field – even a short period – is a significant advantage in the job market.
All degree programmes include the option to complete practical training. Depending on your degree programme, a traineeship may be compulsory or optional.
You can complete your traineeship in Finland or abroad, paid or unpaid, and with or without financial support from the university. The first step is to check the curriculum of your degree programme or major subject to see at what stage of your studies you can complete a traineeship.
Traineeship funding
Traineeship funding is financial support paid by the university to employers to help degree students gain access to traineeships and employment. To be eligible for traineeship funding, your practical training must meet certain conditions.
Read more about the conditions and how to apply on the traineeship funding page.
Practical training without traineeship funding or unpaid traineeship
You can also complete practical training without the university’s traineeship funding – for example, if the salary paid by the employer is lower than what the funding conditions require, or if your traineeship is unpaid.
If you are considering an unpaid traineeship, familiarise yourself with the student insurance cover on the UEF Intra beforehand (link, login required).
Things to consider before looking for a traineeship
Choosing practical training is part of your career planning. Before you start applying, it is worth reflecting on questions such as:
- What values and interests are important to you?
- What motivates you?
- What kind of roles would you like to have in the future, and what skills do you need for them?
- What kind of employer and work community would suit you?
