Erasmus+ traineeship gives you the opportunity to complete a traineeship abroad in Europe as part of your studies. You can apply for an Erasmus+ traineeship grant once you have a confirmed traineeship placement. The traineeship can be a voluntary or mandatory part of your degree.
Discuss your traineeship plans with your departmental coordinator before you apply for the grant. The traineeship must be recognised as part of your degree at UEF (exception: recent graduate traineeship). More information about Practical training during your studies.
Important: The Erasmus+ traineeship grant is the primary form of support for traineeships in Europe. If your traineeship is located outside Europe, read more about funding options on the International traineeship support page and ask your study programme’s traineeship contact person. Check who your traineeship contact is from the study community of your field.
Who can apply
Erasmus+ traineeship is open to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral level students of all fields from their first year of studies onwards. Recent graduates can also participate in Erasmus+ traineeship, when you apply for the traineeship grant before graduation (see details below).
Traineeship placement
You need to find a traineeship placement yourself. Suitable placements include:
- private companies,
- public organisations.
A traineeship placement cannot be:
- an EU institution,
- an organisation managing EU programmes,
- an organisation located in Finland (the placement must be in another country).
Destination countries: Your traineeship placement must be located in a country participating in the Erasmus+ programme: EU Member States (not Finland), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey. Grants can also be awarded for traineeships in the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
Duration
You can complete both long-term and blended short-term traineeships through the Erasmus+ programme:
| Traineeship type | Duration | Grant duration |
| Long-term traineeship | 2-12 months | Up to 4 months |
| Short-term blended traineeship | 5-30 days (physical component) + mandatory virtual component | Entire physical component |
The traineeship must be full-time (minimum 30 hours per week).
How to apply
You apply for the Erasmus+ traineeship grant in the SoleMOVE system. The application period opens annually from 1 June to 31 May. Applications are processed continuously as long as grants are available – grants are awarded in the order applications are received.

- Apply for the grant at least one month before your traineeship starts – grants are generally not awarded for traineeships starting in less than one month.
- You cannot apply for or receive the grant retroactively.
- You can only apply once your traineeship placement is confirmed.
When you start your application in SoleMOVE, select the following settings:
- Application type: Normal student exchange
- Mobility type: Traineeship

12-month rule
You can complete several Erasmus+ study and traineeship periods during your studies. The combined total of study and traineeship periods can be up to 12 months per degree level (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral).
Main rule:
- Once the 12-month limit at a certain degree level is reached, you can no longer participate in an Erasmus+ mobility period at that degree level.
- You must have enough months remaining when you leave – the 12-month limit cannot be exceeded during your mobility period.
Please also note:
- The limit includes months used during previous studies at the same degree level and time as an Erasmus Mundus grant recipient.
Recent graduate traineeship
As a recent graduate, you can participate in an Erasmus+ traineeship if the following conditions are met:
- You have applied for the Erasmus+ traineeship grant in SoleMOVE at least one month before your graduation.
- The traineeship both starts and ends within one year of your graduation.
- You still have enough exchange months available (12-month rule).
Good to know: A recent graduate traineeship does not need to be included in your degree.
Traineeship agreement
Before your traineeship starts, you must complete a traineeship agreement (Learning Agreement for Traineeships). You can find the form on the page Forms and reporting.
Your insurance during a traineeship abroad
Check that your insurance coverage is in order before you leave.
UEF’s accident insurance is in force when:
- the traineeship is included in your curriculum,
- the traineeship is unpaid,
- it involves practical work.
Note: The insurance is not in force during recent graduate traineeships.
UEF’s liability insurance is not in force when you work outside UEF during a traineeship.
Obtain your own liability insurance if your employer does not provide one. The insurance must cover at least damages you may cause as a trainee at the workplace.
For more information about UEF’s accident insurance: Insurance cover during your studies.
OLS language courses
You can take OLS language courses (Online Language Support) before and during your traineeship. You can also take the OLS language test included in the Erasmus+ programme in the language you will be using during your traineeship.
