PrintYou can publish your dissertation in the faculty’s publication series Dissertations in Social Sciences and Business Studies.
Once the Faculty Council has granted you permission to defend, you can publish your dissertation in the series Publications of the University of Eastern Finland. Dissertations in Social Sciences and Business Studies, both in print and electronically. Your dissertation must be published at least seven days before the public defence and must be available for viewing at the university library and the faculty.
Allow at least two months for the publication process. Take into account postal delivery times, the printing house’s schedule, and possible holiday periods. Contact the series editor as early as possible – and before the date of the public defence has been set.
Starting the publication process
Contact the series editor no later than when you have received permission to defend. The series editor is responsible for:
• providing publishing guidelines
• checking the layout
• ordering ISBN numbers
• granting the publication permit.
University Lecturer Markus Mättö serves as the editor-in-chief of the dissertation series and is responsible for matters of principle related to the publication agreement and the publishing process.
Publication agreement
- Download the publication agreement form from the UEF Intranet (login required) or request it from the series editor.
- Complete the agreement and send it to [email protected].
- You will receive an electronic signature request from the library via UEFSign.
Creative Commons licensing of your dissertation
In accordance with UEF’s open science policy, it is recommended that doctoral dissertations are published under a Creative Commons (CC) license. You can license:
• the introductory section in an article-based dissertation
• the entire work in a monograph.
You are responsible for ensuring that your dissertation can be licensed and for choosing the appropriate CC license.
How to license your dissertation
- In addition to the publication agreement, complete the CC licensing checklist. You can find the checklist and CC licensing clauses here.
- Send the checklist and the publication agreement to [email protected].
- You will receive an electronic signature request from the library via UEFSign.
- Include your chosen CC license on the same page as the ISBN numbers and editors in your dissertation. If you need an exception to this placement, agree on this with the series editor.
Layout and proofreading of the dissertation
It is recommended that you use a professional typesetter for the layout of your dissertation. You can download the dissertation layout template (docx) from Kamu or request it from the series editor.
• If you do the layout yourself, contact the series editor before you begin. In addition, send the layout to the series editor for checking before you send it to the printing house for proofing.
• If you obtain the layout service from a printing house, the proof provided by the printing house is sufficient.
Proofreading
If you write your dissertation entirely or partly in a language other than your mother tongue, have the language of those sections checked by a native-speaker proofreader. Finalise your text before sending it for layout.
Title page
Include a separate title page with the university logo in your dissertation. The title page must indicate:
• that the dissertation has been accepted for public examination by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies
• the date, time and location of the public defence.
You can request a title page template also from the series editor.
Publishing articles and essays in the dissertation
In an article-based or essay-based dissertation, all articles or essays and the introductory section are published in print and electronically, unless there is a legal obstacle to publishing any part of them. Only omit articles for which the original publisher has not granted republication permission or which are under an embargo. If necessary, modify articles in accordance with the wishes of the copyright holder.
Republication permissions
Obtain republication permission for both the print and electronic versions of each article.
Check whether the article was published under an Open Access license – if so, you do not need to request permission.
Attach the permissions to your publication agreement. Download a template for requesting republication permission is available in English.
If you cannot publish all articles or essays in your dissertation, report the research results presented in them in the introductory section or in an appendix.
It is also recommended that you familiarise yourself with UEF’s Open Access policy during the dissertation process.
