What is a separate certificate?
A separate certificate is a certificate for basic, intermediate or advanced studies or other studies you have completed (e.g. specialisation or continuing education). The certificate is issued by the faculty or the Centre for Continuous Learning. A separate certificate includes the grade and completion date of the study module, as well as a qualification clause where applicable.
As a rule, separate certificates are not issued for study modules that are part of a degree. An exception is made for teaching subject studies of 60 or 120 credits, for which a qualification clause is not included in your degree certificate. If you complete a study module after graduating, a separate certificate will be issued if the module leads to a professional qualification or if the faculty considers it appropriate for another specific reason.
In other cases, an official transcript of academic records is sufficient. You can obtain one as follows:
- Download a digitally certified transcript of academic records from the Atomi service in Peppi (requires an active UEF user account).
- Request a printed transcript of academic records from the Student and Learning Services service desk or order one via UEF e-Services (requires registration).
How to apply for a separate certificate
- Make sure your studies are recorded in Peppi
Check that all courses included in the study module have been registered in Peppi.
- Request compilation and assessment of your study module
Contact the department/unit responsible for the teaching and request the compilation and assessment of your study module.
Once the study module has been assessed, your transcript of academic records will show the compiled study module with the individual courses and their grades listed below it. The transcript is attached to the separate certificate.
Note: You cannot raise the grade of a study module after the separate certificate has been issued (applies to certificates issued on or after 1 August 2025).
- Complete the application form in the UEF e-Services
Apply for a separate certificate using the online form (requires login with your UEF user account).
The apllication form asks for your consent to digital delivery:
- If you give your consent, you will receive an email notification when the certificate is ready, along with download instructions.
- If you do not give your consent, you will receive the digital separate certificate as well as a paper copy sent to the address you have given.
Delivery of the certificate
You will receive your separate certificate in both Finnish and English.
The University of Eastern Finland has transitioned to digital separate certificates from 1 May 2024. In the first phase, digital separate certificates have been introduced for studies completed through the open university, continuing education, study modules completed at faculties, and study modules leading to a professional qualification. In other cases, paper certificates may still be issued.
The delivery time is approximately 3–4 weeks. During the summer and Christmas holidays, delivery times are usually longer.
You will receive an email notification when the certificate is ready. Download and save the certificate in several secure locations. You can verify the signature of a digitally signed certificate in Atomi Validator.
You can print the digital separate certificate on paper yourself. However, a printed copy is not an official certificate.
If you are applying for work or studies abroad and need to present a paper certificate, you can ask the university to stamp a paper copy as a certified copy.
If your separate certificate is lost or destroyed
