Travel grants for doctoral researchers

As a doctoral researcher, you can apply for travel grants for conference and seminar trips. Several foundations and funds award travel grants.

You can find information about travel grants in the Pivot RP database (link opens in new tab, UEF login required) and the Research.fi database (link opens in new tab).

Grants funded by the Saastamoinen Foundation are awarded to doctoral researchers and postdoc researchers for research stays abroad. The application period is annually in late winter/early spring, and it is announced on UEF’s Viva Engage. Read more about the grants on the intranet (link opens in new tab, UEF login required).

Travel grants from the Philosophical Faculty

The Philosophical Faculty’s doctoral programme (FILOTO) awards travel grants for conference and seminar trips in Finland and abroad.

Who can apply?

You can apply if you:

are a doctoral researcher in the Philosophical Faculty and registered as present
do not have an employment relationship with the University of Eastern Finland

Application period and processing

The application period for 2026 ends on 30 November 2026.

Applications are processed once a month, excluding the summer holiday period.

Travel grants from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies

The departments and units of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies award travel grants for study, seminar and conference trips.

Who can apply?

Travel grants are intended for doctoral researchers who do not have an employment relationship with the University of Eastern Finland. This also applies to part-time employment contracts held by grant-funded researchers.

Note: International mobility support for employees: If you are a member of the teaching and research staff of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies and have an employment relationship with the university, you can apply for a special incentive compensation for 1–12 months of research work abroad. Read more about the faculty’s international mobility support on the intranet (UEF login required).

When to apply?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applications are processed within 1–2 months of receipt, excluding the summer holiday period.

Attach the following to your application:

a report on the progress of your studies in accordance with your personal study plan for doctoral studies, and a schedule for completing any remaining studies
your supervisor’s endorsement for attending the event (an email is sufficient).

Decisions on grants are made by the head of the department or unit.
