In cross-institutional studies, you complete courses at another Finnish higher education institution that has a cooperation agreement with your home institution. The cooperation usually covers specific courses and is available to students in specific fields.
You can participate in cross-institutional studies when:
- your study right at your home institution is valid
- you are registered as present.
Key concepts
- Cross-institutional studies – the opportunity to complete courses at another higher education institution based on a cooperation agreement between the institutions.
- Cross-Institutional Studies Service (in Finnish: Ripa) – a national service through which enrolments for cross-institutional studies are processed. You access it through your home institution’s student and study information system (at UEF: Peppi).
- Home institution – the higher education institution where you hold the study right for your degree.
- Host institution – the higher education institution whose course you enrol in through the Cross-Institutional Studies Service.
Outgoing UEF students: how to enrol in a course at another institution
- Check that the course is suitable for your degree. Confirm with your PSP counsellor that you can include the course in your degree.
- Enrol in the course in Peppi. When enrolling, you must give your consent for the transfer of your personal data — without it, you cannot enrol in cross-institutional studies.
- Wait for your enrolment to be processed. You will be notified of the acceptance or rejection in Peppi, under the Messages section on the Review tab of your PSP, as well as in the PSP structure and on the Registrations tab.
- Once you are accepted to study at the host institution, you will receive a confirmation email about your study right. At the same time, you will be granted a fixed-term study right at the host institution. The host institution will provide you with instructions on how to get started, for example regarding user accounts.
- Your completion is transferred automatically. Once you have completed the course and the teacher at the host institution has graded it, your course completion is automatically transferred to Peppi at UEF. Check with the host institution about any opportunities to retake or raise your grade.
When studying at another institution, you must follow the rules and regulations of the institution providing the teaching.
You can find step-by-step instructions for enrolling in a cross-institutional course in the Peppi Handbook (opens in a new tab; UEF login required).

Enrolment
You can enrol in UEF’s cross-institutional course offerings if you have a valid study right at your home institution and are registered as present. When your study right at your home institution expires, your right to complete courses at UEF also ends.
Enrol in the course through your home institution’s study information system. You will see the acceptance or rejection of your enrolment in your home institution’s system.
Study right
You will only be granted a study right for the courses to which your enrolment has been accepted. Your study right is valid until the end of the academic year, in accordance with the course implementation period.
Cancelling your enrolment
Your enrolment is binding. If you are unable to attend the course, cancel your enrolment so that a student on the waiting list can take your place. Two examples:
- The enrolment period is still open and you have not yet been accepted: you can cancel your enrolment in Peppi.
- The enrolment period has ended: contact [email protected].
Activating your UEF user account
Activate your UEF user account and use it to access all UEF services. Instructions for activating your account (link).
Logging in to the eLearn Moodle learning platform
Once your enrolment in a UEF course has been accepted, log in to eLearn Moodle using your UEF user account.
Note that the course’s online learning environment will only appear in Moodle after the teacher has granted you access. If you need a course key to register, you will receive it along with further instructions from the teacher before the course begins.
Completing the course and schedules
You can find information about the learning outcomes, content, assessment criteria and schedules in the course description. Read these carefully — some courses may require on-site attendance on the campus where the course is taught.
Individual study arrangements
If you have been granted individual study arrangements at your home institution, these will generally also be followed at UEF. Contact the teacher in charge of the course no later than the start of the course so that the arrangements can be taken into account.
Assessment
Course assessment is completed within three weeks of the final assignment or examination. The teacher in charge of the course may, for a justified reason, extend this deadline by one week.
Your grade is transferred automatically to your home institution’s study information system. Information about opportunities to retake or raise your grade can be found in the course’s online learning environment.
