Employment contracts at UEF and student exchange
If you have an employment contract at the University of Eastern Finland, your contract must end before your exchange period begins. You can still apply for exchange and prepare for it while your contract is active.
This applies to all degree students (bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students) and all types of employment contracts, for example:
- Assistant (e.g. research, education, conference or project assistant),
- Trainee/intern,
- Doctoral researcher (e.g. 10% employment),
- Student Ambassador.
The number of hours specified in your contract (full-time, part-time, etc.) does not matter. Bachelor and Master’s degree students must contact their supervisor and apply for an exemption from work for the entire duration of the exchange. Doctoral students’ employment contracts must end before any student exchange period can begin.
The rule applies to both long-term and short-term exchanges.
Student exchange and internships in the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom continues to participate in the Erasmus+ programme as a partner country. You can apply for exchange at a British university if your department has a valid Erasmus+ agreement or if UEF has a bilateral agreement with the host university.
YUFE exchange to the University of Essex is one option – read more about the YUFE Alliance on Kamu.
Internships in the UK
- If your placement is at a higher education institution: You can apply for an Erasmus+ traineeship grant if there is a valid Erasmus+ agreement that covers traineeships between UEF and the host institution. Without an agreement, you may apply for your department’s own traineeship funding.
- If your placement is at a public or private organisation (not a higher education institution): You can apply for an Erasmus+ traineeship grant. Regular Erasmus+ traineeship rules apply.
The war on Ukraine and its impact on student exchange
Following the policies issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture on 9 March 2022, the University of Eastern Finland has suspended all higher education and research cooperation with Russian organisations. Read more about the Ministry of Education and Culture’s policies on the Ministry’s website (new tab).
In practice, this means that you cannot apply for student exchange at Russian universities until further notice.
