You can apply for short-term exchanges at destinations outside of Europe. Short-term exchanges include summer and winter schools as well as other intensive and short courses at UEF’s partner universities. A short-term exchange means participating in a specific course or school – it cannot be a general short stay abroad.
Short-term exchanges are open to all UEF degree students: bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students. You cannot have a valid employment contract at UEF during a short-term exchange.

Remember that you must be registered as a present degree student at UEF throughout the exchange period. You cannot graduate before the exchange ends, and the studies you complete must be included in your UEF degree.
Non-EU/EEA students: Before applying, discuss with your study programme coordinator whether a short-term exchange could extend your studies and/or affect your tuition fees at UEF.

Mobility grant for short exchanges outside of Europe
UEF awards mobility grants for short-term exchange periods outside of Europe. The grant amount is €1,000.
What is the grant for?
The grant is intended for:
- Nordic Centre summer courses (China or India)
- summer/winter schools or other short/intensive courses organised by one of UEF’s bilateral partner universities
The host university should primarily be a UEF partner university, but other higher education institutions outside the EU that organise courses are also eligible. The grant can also be used for fee-based courses.
Grant conditions
- The short-term period must provide credits that you include in your UEF degree.
- The duration must be at least 5 working days but up to 2 months. The duration may include orientation or welcome events, but not travel days.
- You must not have a valid employment contract at UEF during the exchange, and you cannot start a new contract during the period.
- The grant is not available for remote or virtual courses – the period must require physical presence at the host university.
- The grant is awarded once per degree level per student (including doctoral students). The exception is students with fewer opportunities (see below).
- The grant cannot be combined with other UEF grants (e.g. traineeship grant or other mobility grant). Accessibility grants are an exception.
- If you are already going to the same host university for a longer exchange and also plan to attend a short course there, the short period is considered part of the longer exchange and a separate grant cannot be awarded.
Who is prioritised?
Grants are awarded as long as they are available. Priority is given to:
- Bachelor’s and master’s students with fewer opportunities to participate in long-term exchanges – for example, students with families or students who work (e.g. special groups). Read more about special groups in the Funding your exchange studies page.
- Doctoral students without an employment contract at UEF – on the recommendation of their supervisor.
Students in the special groups category may receive the grant more than once. For all other students, the grant is awarded once per degree level.
How to apply
The grant application period is open annually between 1 July and 30 June.
- First, apply for the course at the host university. If the course requires a nomination from UEF, contact International Mobility Services: [email protected].
- Submit your grant application in SoleMOVE. Attach the following:
- transcript of records
- a free-form motivation letter describing the course you are applying for
- If you have already received an acceptance from the host university, you may attach the acceptance letter instead of a motivation letter.
- Apply well in advance – no later than one month before the start of the period, preferably earlier due to processing time.
The grant is awarded conditionally: the host university or course organiser must accept you before the grant can be paid.
Other things to note
- You will also complete a Learning Agreement (exchange study plan) before the period begins.
- Request a certificate of attendance from the host university before the end of the period.
International Mobility Services will send you the necessary forms and instructions by email. You are responsible for your own travel arrangements and all costs associated with the exchange.
The grant is paid on the payment date closest to the exchange start date, if you have submitted all the required documents well in advance. Payment dates at UEF are every 15th and last day of the month.
