Student card and student discounts
Last modified: 15.05.2026
PrintYour student card gives you access to a wide range of discounts and benefits during your studies. On this page, you will find out how to activate your card and what benefits are available to you.
Who can get a student card?
If you are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and have registered as present, you are automatically a member of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). As a member, you are entitled to a student card as well as ISYY’s member benefits and services (link opens in a new tab).
Your membership is valid until the end of the semester in which you graduate. However, your digital student card will stop working within approximately one month of graduation, and a sticker can no longer be issued after you have graduated.
How to activate your student card
- Complete your annual registration and pay the Student Union membership fee.
- Activate your UEF user account for online services (if you are starting in the autumn, you can do this from 1 August onwards).
- Activate your digital student card through Frank and/or Slice (link opens in a new tab), or order a plastic card.
You can use the digital and plastic cards side by side, or just one of them. Digital student cards are free of charge.
During the activation process, you may be asked for details such as your study right number. You can find this in Peppi (link opens in a new tab) by opening the menu next to your name. You log in to Peppi with your UEF user account. Find out more about Peppi (link).
We recommend activating your student card in August, once you have activated your user account, so that your card is ready when your studies begin.
Student benefits for exchange students
If you are an exchange student at UEF, you can choose if you wish to join the Student Union or not. If you pay the membership fee and join the Student Union, all ISYY’s benefits and services (opens in a new tab) are available to you.
However, if you decide NOT to join ISYY, you are still entitled to many of the student benefits (including student-priced lunches in campus restaurants (opens in a new tab), travel discounts, Sykettä Campus Sports in Joensuu (opens in a new tab)/Sykettä Campus Sports in Kuopio (opens in a new tab)). All the exchange students, weather an ISYY member of not, can use the Tuudo app as their student card to prove their student status. Please note that the student benefits are available for you when your study right is valid.
Student discounts and benefits
Your student discounts and benefits become available from the start of the semester in which you begin your studies – as long as you have registered as present and paid the Student Union membership fee. The autumn semester starts on 1 August and the spring semester on 1 January. If you start in the autumn, you register for the entire academic year at once.
Student-priced lunch
With your student card, you can get a subsidised student lunch at student restaurants covered by the Kela meal subsidy (link opens in a new tab).
If your plastic student card has not arrived before your studies begin, you can also get a student-priced lunch with:
- your digital student card
- the Tuudo app
- a certificate of registration, which you can order from Student and Learning Services (contact details at the bottom of this page)
The certificate of registration is accepted at student restaurants until the end of October. After that, you will need your student card.
Travel
With your student card, you can get discounts on VR train tickets (opens in a new tab) and long-distance bus services (Matkahuolto, opens in a new tab).
Please note that Matkahuolto no longer offers a standard student discount. Discounts may vary depending on the transport operator, so always check the price on the operator’s own website.
Local bus benefits by campus city:
- Local bus benefits in Joensuu (link opens in a new tab)
- Local bus benefits in Kuopio (link opens in a new tab)
Other discounts
Your student card entitles you to discounts at many shops in the campus cities – it is always worth asking about a discount when making a purchase, even if one is not specifically advertised. You can find a wide range of student discounts on the Slice (link opens in a new tab) or Frank website (link opens in a new tab).
