Internal appeals procedure at the university
Last modified: 17.04.2026
PrintYou can find information about rectification procedures for student admissions other than internal admissions on the Student admissions page (uef.fi, opens in a new tab).
These instructions do not apply to the grading of doctoral dissertations, licentiate theses or Master’s theses in advanced studies – you can find separate instructions for these in their own section.
The rectification procedure for the grading of a study attainment has two stages.
Stage 1: Request for rectification to the teacher
If you are dissatisfied with the grading of your study attainment, you can request rectification from the teacher who carried out the grading. You must submit your request for rectification within 14 days of having had the opportunity to learn your results and how the grading criteria were applied in your case.
Send your request for rectification by email to the teacher in charge of the course. In your message, state whether you consent to receiving the decision electronically. If you consent, you will receive the teacher’s decision by UEF email. If the teacher is unavailable (for example, an out-of-office reply is active), you can submit your request for rectification to the UEF Registry Office:
- by email: [email protected]
- by post: Registry Office, University of Eastern Finland, P.O. Box 1627, FI-70211 KUOPIO
In this case, indicate which teacher’s course grading you are requesting rectification for.
The teacher in charge must respond to your request for rectification within 14 days. If the teacher does not rectify the grading as you requested, they will issue a written decision. The teacher can obtain guidance on preparing the decision from [email protected].
Stage 2: Request for rectification to the Board of Appeal
If you are dissatisfied with the teacher’s decision, you can submit a request for rectification to the UEF Board of Appeal within 14 days of being notified of the teacher’s decision. The Board of Appeal cannot process your request unless you have first received a decision from the teacher on your Stage 1 request for rectification.
Submit your request for rectification to the Registry Office:
- by email: [email protected]
- by post: Registry Office, University of Eastern Finland, P.O. Box 1627, FI-70211 KUOPIO
A decision made in the rectification procedure for the grading of a study attainment cannot be appealed.
Universities Act, Sections 82 and 84; UEF Education Regulations, Section 44
The rectification procedure for recognition of prior learning (RPL) decisions has two stages.
Stage 1: Request for rectification to the original decision-maker
If you are dissatisfied with a decision on the recognition of prior learning, you can request rectification from the person who made the decision. You must submit your request for rectification within 14 days of being notified of the decision.
Submit your request for rectification to the UEF Registry Office:
- by email: [email protected]
- by post: Registry Office, University of Eastern Finland, P.O. Box 1627, FI-70211 KUOPIO
In your request, state whether you consent to receiving the decision electronically. If you consent, you will receive the decision by UEF email.
The person who made the original RPL decision will prepare a written decision on your request for rectification and notify both you and the Registry Office. Guidance on preparing the decision is available from [email protected].
Stage 2: Request for rectification to the Board of Appeal
If you are dissatisfied with the Stage 1 decision, you can submit a request for rectification to the UEF Board of Appeal within 14 days of being notified of the decision. The Board of Appeal cannot process your request unless you have first received a decision from the original decision-maker on your Stage 1 request for rectification.
Submit your request for rectification to the UEF Registry Office:
- by email: [email protected]
- by post: Registry Office, University of Eastern Finland, P.O. Box 1627, FI-70211 KUOPIO
A decision made in the rectification procedure for the recognition of prior learning cannot be appealed.
Universities Act, Sections 82 and 84; UEF Education Regulations, Section 45
If you are dissatisfied with the grading of your doctoral dissertation, licentiate thesis or advanced studies thesis (for example, your Master’s thesis), you can request for rectification from the UEF Board of Appeal. The rectification procedure has a single stage.
You must submit your request for rectification within 14 days of being notified of the grading decision.
Submit your request for rectification to the UEF Registry Office:
- by email: [email protected]
- by post: Registry Office, University of Eastern Finland, P.O. Box 1627, FI-70211 KUOPIO
A decision made in the rectification procedure for the grading of a study attainment cannot be appealed.

Universities Act, Section 82; UEF Education Regulations, Section 43
A request for rectification may be submitted by the person to whom the decision is directed or whose rights, obligations or interests are directly affected by the decision. You may use an authorised representative if you wish.

- any documents you wish to refer to in support of your request
If you are using an authorised representative, also provide the representative’s name and contact details and attach a power of attorney.
Electronic notification
Electronic notification of the decision requires your consent. Electronic notification means that the decision will be sent to your UEF email. Without your consent, the decision will be sent by post. You can speed up the process by stating your consent to electronic notification when you submit your request for rectification.
