What is a study module?
Examples of study modules include basic studies, intermediate studies and advanced studies.
The minimum scope required by the Government Decree on University Degrees is:
- Basic studies: at least 25 credits
- Intermediate studies: together with basic studies, at least 60 credits
- Advanced studies: at least 60 credits
How to request assessment and locking of a study module
Once you have completed all the courses included in a study module, you can request its assessment and locking. At the latest, study modules are assessed and locked when you apply for your degree certificate. The module is assessed by a person designated by the faculty.
How are study modules assessed?
Study modules are graded on a scale of 0–5 or on a pass–fail basis. The criteria for calculating the grade are described in the curriculum. The date of completion recorded for the module is the date of the last course completed within it.
Basic studies, intermediate studies and advanced studies each form an independent module and are assessed separately. The modules are included in the degree in their entirety.
Can you raise a study module grade?
An assessed and locked study module can also be unlocked at your request.
You can raise the grade of a locked study module, but please note the following limitations:
- You can only improve a grade as long as the course requirements within the module are still in effect.
- You cannot retake a course that has been removed from the curriculum.
- You cannot raise a study module grade after you have completed your degree.
- You cannot raise the grade of a study module completed at another university at the University of Eastern Finland.
- The curriculum will state separately if raising a grade is not possible at all.
Other study modules
Your degree may also include other study modules defined in the curriculum. Other study modules are not given a grade, but they are locked in Peppi with a status of pass. Other study modules are not minor subject modules.
Another study module is compiled by a person designated by the faculty.
Special cases
Module courses split between two degrees
Splitting a study module between a bachelor’s and a master’s degree is not recommended. However, if some of the courses are included in your bachelor’s degree and some in your master’s degree, the module will be recorded on your master’s degree certificate. Credits are calculated based on actual completions, and all courses within the module are taken into account in the grading.
Some courses in a degree and some under an alumni study right
Splitting a study module is not recommended. However, if some of the courses are included in your degree and some have been completed under an alumni study right, you will receive a separate certificate. The certificate will include a note stating that some of the courses have been included in previously completed degrees. A qualification clause will be added to the separate certificate if necessary. Credits are calculated based on actual completions, and all courses within the module are taken into account in the grading.
The same course is compulsory in two modules
If a course is compulsory in two study modules, you complete it for one module, and it is recognised for the other through RPL. The credits will then be recorded in both modules. You do not need to submit a separate RPL application. Any exceptions are specified in the curriculum.
