It is worth starting your career planning early in your doctoral education. When you reflect on your career in good time, you can better identify your skills and learn to make use of them in a wide range of roles – both within and beyond the university.
Make your career plans early
Career planning helps you to:
- set competence goals and career objectives
- acquire knowledge and skills in a systematic way
- see how your expertise fits different types of work
- strengthen your confidence in yourself and your career options.
Get started with small steps
- Create a career plan using the URAT tool (link opens in new tab), which you can use independently or together with your supervisor. Update your plan annually.
- If possible, discuss your career goals with your supervisor.
- Choose courses that support your career plans from the transferable skills studies or other study modules.
- ‘Take part in the career planning and job seeking courses organised annually by UEF Researcher Training Services:
- Career Planning Portfolio for Researchers guides you in creating a career portfolio and helps you identify your strengths, values, goals and career options.
- Job Searching Tools for Researchers helps you develop your job seeking skills (application documents, job interviews) and find different types of work opportunities.
This is how you build a strong foundation for working life during your doctoral education.
