Open science, data management and data protection
Last modified: 05.05.2026
PrintUEF’s publication and data policy aims to make publicly funded research knowledge widely available to the scientific community and society. This means opening up research methods, results, data and publications so that anyone can read, download and use them free of charge and without access restrictions.
You can find more information about open science (link opens in new tab) and open access publishing (link opens in new tab) on the library’s website. The library also offers the course Basics of Open and Responsible Science (2 ECTS credits), which is part of the researcher’s general transferable skills studies and provides a foundation in open science
Data Management Plan
A Data Management Plan (DMP) helps you ensure that you have handled your research data in a way that can be reliably verified and, where necessary, made openly available.
Prepare your DMP at the beginning of your research. In the plan, you describe how you will handle the research data generated during your project. Update your DMP throughout the research project – it is intended to be a living document.
You can get support for preparing your plan from the Basics of Research Data Management course (1–2 ECTS credits) organised by the library. The library also provides other support for research data management at different stages of your research.

Processing of personal data and data protection
If your research involves processing of personal data, you must take data protection into account. Data protection refers to compliance with legislation on the processing of personal data. Its purpose is to promote good practices and safeguard the right to privacy. Make sure you also describe the processing of personal data in your Data Management Plan (DMP).
Further information:
- Processing personal data in scientific research (link opens in new tab, requires UEF login)
- Data protection guidelines for students processing personal data in their thesis
Note: UEF staff members must successfully complete the data security and data protection section in the Navisec Flex online training service every three years.
Secure storage of research data
Research data and datasets are divided into three categories based on confidentiality and publicity requirements:
- high-security data
- basic-security data
- public data
UEF Digital Services provides the following options for storing and preserving research data:
- backed-up researcher disk space (50 GB)
- non-backed-up researcher disk space (2 TB)
- REDCap data management service
Make sure you also describe the storage of your research data in your DMP.
You can find more information about data security services, data handling guidelines and data security regulations on the intranet (link opens in new tab, requires UEF login).
