PrintThis page brings together the key research ethics matters in the form of a checklist. Use it to make sure you have considered everything you need to at each stage of your research.
Familiarise yourself with the guidelines for responsible conduct of research before starting your research
Remember that you are primarily responsible for following the principles of responsible conduct of research yourself.
Practise honesty, diligence and accuracy in all your research.
Use ethically sound methods and respect the work of other researchers.
Handle research data responsibly and be transparent about your results and any conflicts of interest.
Read the TENK (Finnish National Board on Research Integrity) guidelines on responsible conduct of research (link opens in new tab) and publication authorship (link opens in new tab) before you begin your research.
Find out whether you need an ethical review or a research permit
In an ethical review, the UEF Committee on Research Ethics assesses the ethical acceptability of your research plan. Note: the review does not transfer responsibility for ethical conduct from you to the committee.
Research permit practices vary by discipline and type of research.
If your research requires both an ethical review and a research permit, obtain the ethical review first.
Allow sufficient time for both, as processing follows agreed schedules.
Check the specific requirements for your type of research
Check the originality of your manuscripts
Use the Turnitin plagiarism detection tool to check your article manuscripts.
Your doctoral dissertation must always be checked with Turnitin before it is submitted for preliminary examination.
Consider the ethical aspects of using artificial intelligence
The use of artificial intelligence in research involves questions related to research ethics, copyright and confidentiality.
