Study right for doctoral studies and registration

Doctoral study right

Once you have been granted a study right, you must accept the offer of admission electronically. Accept the offer in the My Studyinfo service in Studyinfo (Opintopolku). Please read the instructions. Your study right remains valid until you graduate, unless you give it up voluntarily.

Registration

First registration

You must complete your annual registration as either present or absent each academic year. Only students registered as present can participate in teaching, take examinations and complete a degree.

Registration as absent as a new doctoral reseacher

As a new degree student, you can register as absent for your first academic year only for reasons specified in the Universities Act:

You are completing military service, non-military service or voluntary military service for women.

You are on parental leave due to the birth or adoption of a child.

You are unable to begin your studies due to your own illness or disability.

If you register as absent for your first academic year, you must submit supporting documents to Student and Learning Services customer service by the date specified in the registration instructions. Acceptable documents include, for example, a military service call-up order, a Kela decision on parental allowance or a medical certificate.

Please note:  If you do not submit the documents on time, you will lose your study right and will need to apply to have it reinstated.

Registration in following academic years

You must register as either present or absent each academic year. The registration period for continuing students is 1 June – 15 September.

Student and Learning Services’ Customer Service

The Student and Learning Services’ customer service desk offers general study counselling, information on term registration and study rights and maintains the student register. Changes to personal information are done at the Student and Learning Services’ customer service. The customer services desk also provides study certificates and transcripts of records.

Opening/office hours:

on Wednesdays the customer service desk is open from 10 am to 2 pm (10–14).
At other times the customer service desk is open by appointment only. You can book an appointment in an hour, at the earliest, and a week in advance, at most. You can book a Teams meeting or an in-person appointment at the Joensuu or Kuopio customer service point through our booking site (opens in a new tab).
