PrintWhat is Zoom?
Zoom is a remote meeting software that allows you to participate in teaching and group work activities over the Internet. With Zoom, you can share your desktop, phone screen, webcam and audio. Zoom runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android (Zoom Workplace).
Getting started and creating a meeting
Registering a Zoom account is not required if you want to only join your teacher’s Zoom sessions. However, as a UEF student, you can create your own UEF Zoom account. In UEF Zoom, you can create a meeting for up to 300 simultaneous participants with no time limit.
You can install the Zoom desktop app on your computer here. You can also download the Zoom Cloud Meetings app on your mobile phone or tablet from Play Store (Android) or Apple Store (iOS).
- Create a UEF Zoom account.
- Zoom instructions on UEF Intra (log in with your UEF account).
- Zoom’s own instructions.
Joining a Zoom meeting
You can join a Zoom meeting by clicking on the link provided by your teacher. If your teacher has added a Zoom activity on their Moodle course, you can join the meeting directly from the Moodle course page. You can join Zoom meetings either from a browser or via Zoom desktop application. When clicking an invitation link, select the option Join from your browser if you cannot download or run the application. Note that the browser version has more limited functionality than the desktop app.
Adding audio
To participate with your voice, add your audio device to the meeting:
- Select Join Audio from the bottom left corner.
- Click Join with Computer Audio.
You can check which audio device is selected by clicking the arrow (^) button next to the microphone icon in the bottom left corner.
Tools in a meeting
You will find all available tools in the bottom toolbar of the Zoom meeting window:
- Invite – Invite other participants to the meeting if necessary.
- Participants – View the list of participants.
- Share – Share your computer or mobile screen with other participants, provided the teacher has given you permission for sharing.
- Chat – Communicate with the teacher and other participants via text.
- Record – If the teacher has allowed recording, you can record the meeting as a video file. Use only local recording (Record on this Computer). Note: Do not use cloud recording – it is available only for teachers.
Updating the Zoom application
If you already have the Zoom desktop app installed, you can check for updates:
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop app.
- Click your profile picture, then select Check for Updates.
- If a newer version is available, it will download and install automatically.
