Self-study facilities are intended for students’ independent work. Please remember to follow the university’s hygiene and safety guidelines in the spaces.
Access badge
You can access the 24/7 self-study facilities with an access badge. The access badge is free of charge and is valid for the duration of your study rights.
Where can I get an access badge?
You can apply for an access badge using this form throughout your study rights. If you already have an access badge, you can request to add access rights to another facility (e.g. electronic exam) to the same an access badge . You will receive a notification by email when the access badge is available for collection from key services (see key services location and opening hours) or when the rights have been updated for an existing access badge .
What if the access badge is lost?
You must immediately report the loss of the access badge by email to [email protected] or [email protected]. The access badge holder is responsible for any misuse of the access badge. The access badge is personal and may not be given to a third party. A lost access badge can be renewed once free of charge. After that, a fee of 50 euros will be charged for the access badge.
When do I have to return the access badge?
The access badge must be returned to Key Services immediately after the end of studies or when it is no longer of use. A fine of €50 will be charged for unreturned badge.
Campus Libraries 24/7 Self-Study facilities
On both campuses, you can use the self-study spaces located in the campus libraries with an access card. During self-service hours, you can use the library’s self-service borrowing and return machines, computers, and multifunction devices for printing, copying, and scanning, as well as make use of the library spaces. In Joensuu, the spaces are located in the Carelia building, and in Kuopio in the Snellmania building.
The meeting and group work rooms in the Snellmania lower lobby are not part of the library’s 24/7 spaces. You can reserve them during opening hours according to students’ reservation rights. More information can be found on the Intra under “Student space reservations.”
Note: You need a UEF library card (Tuudo or traditional plastic card) in order to apply for library access. By obtaining a library card, you commit to following the library’s usage rules, which also apply to 24/7 use.

The self-study facilities in Joensuu and Kuopio campuses
JOENSUU
Oppari is a self-study space on the first floor of the Carelia library. You can come to Oppari to study independently or work in a group. The space has computers and printers.
Carelia (2nd floor)
You can reserve a group work room on the second floor of the Carelia campus library via Peppi or Tuudo. Reservations can be made for a maximum of three hours per day.

Carelia (3rd floor)
The third floor of the library has group work rooms of various sizes: 3A1, 3A2, 3A3, 3A4, 3A5, 3A6, 3B1, 3B2, and 3B3.

Natura computer classrooms N111 and N114 are available around the clock. You need an access badge to access these outside buildings opening hours.
Atrium is located on the 1st floor of the Aurora II building in the Karelian Research Institute premises (entrance B). The space is intended for quiet self-study and group work. It has computers and lounge areas. There is no printing possibility at Atrium.
Natura has computer classrooms N202, N111, and N114, as well as self-study space N110.
Self-study space N110 is located on the 1st floor next to stairwell E (entrance through door A). You can use the space for self-study and group work when there is no teaching. The space has armchairs, sofas, and height-adjustable desks. There is no printing facility.

Taitola has self-study spaces intended for craft science students, where you can make use of, among other things: wood and metal technology machining halls, electronics, stone and plastics workshops, and textile material spaces such as sewing, dyeing, and yarn studios.
Note: You can apply for access rights to Taitola spaces only after completing the safety orientation
KUOPIO
At Oppari, you can study independently or work in a group. The space is divided into two parts:
- Front section is intended for more flexible working. You can work alone or in a group, and normal conversation is allowed.
- Back section is intended for quiet, independent work. Workstations are separated by partitions so you can concentrate in peace.
Oppari has computers and printers, which can be found next to the service desk. The service desk is continuously staffed during opening hours, and you can get help there with most issues.
The space also has two accessible workstations with electrically adjustable desks. The accessible workstations are located near the service desk, making it easy to ask for help.
Oppari has seven group work rooms for student use.
You can reserve a room via Tuudo or Peppi for a maximum of three hours at a time.

Canthia, 1st floor
Rooms 1175, 1176, 1177/1, and 1177/2 are available for self-study and group work. The spaces are freely available on weekdays from 8:00–18:00 and they don’t need a separate reservation. You can use your own computer on the university's wireless network. See the location and directions.

Mediteknia computer classroom MD101 is available for self-study during the academic year on weekdays between 18:00 and 08:00, and during the day when there is no teaching. At other times, the space is generally available around the clock. When the main door of Mediteknia is locked, access to the self-study space is through Mediteknia entrance 2. You need an access badge to access the space outside building opening hours.
Taitostudia is intended for self-study by medical and health sciences students. The space includes, among other things, a simulation room, an eye room, a diagnostic station, an ear room, various simulators, and a radiology room.
Simulation spaces and equipment can also be rented for use outside the university.

Accessible Workstation
Both campuses have accessible workstations designed to support independent study. The workstations are especially suitable for students who experience sensory sensitivity and need a quiet working environment. The workstations feature a 4K display with sharp image quality and adjustable brightness and contrast. The desk is electrically adjustable, so you can set it to a comfortable height. The workstations have barrier-free access.
Freely available workstation
The quiet area of the Joensuu campus library has one accessible workstation with a 4K display, an electrically adjustable desk, and additional lighting. You can use this workstation freely without a separate reservation.

- Joensuu campus: Carelia 162 (EXAM2), 1st floor. Available 24/7.
- Kuopio campus: Canthia CA206, 2nd floor. Available during Oppari service hours – check current opening hours.

Accessible workstations also serve as exam spaces, so always reserve a workstation in advance by emailing [email protected].
- Submit reservations for weekdays by the previous working day at the latest.
- Submit reservations for Saturday and Sunday at the Joensuu campus by Friday at 15:00 at the latest.
