Registration instructions for doctoral students

When you are granted the right to postgraduate studies (a Licentiate or Doctorate), instructions for registration and accepting your study place will be enclosed with the decision. You must register by delivering the registration form to Student and Learning Services, either in person or by post/e-mail.

Student Union membership and membership fees

The Student Union membership fee is voluntary for postgraduate students, i.e. those studying for a Licentiate or Doctorate. The amount of the membership fee is EUR 56 for the full academic year or EUR 30.5 for just the autumn or spring semester.

New postgraduate students will receive the payment details from Student and Learning Services in connection with registration.

In addition to the Student Union membership fee, you can pay the delivery fee for the Uljas students’ magazine (EUR 16.5). In addition, you can support the development cooperation activities of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) by donating the desired amount to SYL’s account. Postgraduate students are not entitled to the same student benefits as undergraduates. Therefore, postgraduate students do not receive discounts on train or bus fares and do not have the right to use the health care services of FSHS. UEF Account

All students will need a UEF account for logging into the university network, WebOodi and their e-mail.

If you have completed your Master’s degree at the University of Eastern Finland, you can continue to use your username. If you do not have a user account, you need to activate it on the university’s website using your online banking codes. Further information about activating the user account.

A new student’s right to register as absent

According to the Universities Act, first-year students can only register as absent for the first academic year for one of the following reasons:

1) the service provided for in the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007) or Act on Women’s Voluntary Military Service (194/1995);

2) maternity, paternity or parental leave; or

3) inability to begin studies due to the student’s own illness or injury.

The provisions apply equally to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Students registering as absent are required to provide proof of the legitimacy of their absence. The documents verifying the legitimacy of the absence shall be delivered to Student and Learning Services by post: Student Services, PL 111, FI-80101 Joensuu, Finland

Registration in the following academic years

Students are required to register themselves as present or absent each year. The registration period for enrolled students begins on 2 May and ends on 15 September.
