All bachelor’s and master’s degrees include a supervised written thesis towards the end of your studies:
• Lower university degree: bachelor’s thesis
• Higher university degree: master’s thesis, or advanced studies thesis (medicine and dentistry)
Thesis guidelines and requiremens
You can find information about the objectives, format, language and assessment criteria of your thesis in your faculty’s or subject’s curriculum.
You will receive instructions for the master’s thesis abstract from your department/school or your thesis supervisor.
Also check whether your study community has any additional guidelines.
Accessibility of your thesis
You are responsible for the accessibility of your thesis. Use the accessible Word template file that complies with the accessibility guidelines. In addition to the template, follow the thesis guidelines of your degree programme.
See also the recording on how to import the template styles and layout into a document you have already started.
Support for writing your thesis
You can get support for your thesis in seminars, where you’ll receive feedback not only from your supervisor but also from your fellow students.
If your master’s thesis or advanced studies thesis has been delayed or stuck, you can join the Gradutalli sessions, which are available in Finnish.
Examination and grading of theses
The process for examining and grading theses varies depending on the level of the thesis.
- Bachelor’s theses are graded by the teacher of the course.
- Master’s theses and advanced studies theses (medicine and dentistry) are graded by the head of department/school.
You can find more detailed information about the assessment criteria in your faculty’s study guide.
The submission, examination and grading process for advanced studies theses is the same across the entire university.
The originality of your thesis will be checked using a plagiarism detection system.
If you are not satisfied with the grading of your thesis, you may appeal for review.
Publication of theses and public access
As a rule, theses included in a degree are public under the Finnish Constitution and the Act on the Openness of Government Activities (Finnish Constitution 731/1999, Section 12.2; Act on the Openness of Government Activities 621/1999, Section 1).
The University of Eastern Finland is committed to the principles of open science and recommends that you publish your master’s thesis or advanced studies thesis openly (Open Access). You can find the publishing guidelines for theses in Kamu.
Each October, the library raffles a 100€ scholarship among all students who have openly published their master’s thesis or advanced studies thesis. Take part in the draw using this form as soon as you have published your thesis openly.
