Through the Nordplus programme, you can go on exchange to the Nordic Countries and the Baltic region. Some Nordic and Baltic universities are also available through Erasmus+ departmental agreements.
The Nordplus programme includes:
- Nordlys network – open to students of all fields
- Subject-specific Nordplus networks – for students in specific fields
Below you will first find information about the Nordlys network, followed by details on the subject-specific networks.
Nordlys network
Through the Nordlys network, you can apply for exchange if:
- your subject does not have a subject-specific Nordplus network, or UEF is not a member of it
- your subject’s network is not active
- you want to study something other than your major during the exchange
Nordlys network exchanges are coordinated by International Mobility Services at UEF.
Who can apply?
The Nordlys network is open to bachelor’s and master’s students of all fields. Doctoral students cannot apply for exchange through the Nordplus programme.
You can go on exchange from your second year of studies onwards, but you can start the application process during your first year.
You must not have a valid employment contract at UEF during the exchange period. For more information about employment and student exchange, see the News and Updates page and the FAQ page.
Non-EU/EEA students: Before applying, discuss with your study programme coordinator whether an exchange period could extend your studies and/or affect your tuition fees at UEF.
Duration
A Nordlys exchange lasts 1 or 2 semesters. The physical mobility period must be at least 2 months – a fully virtual exchange is not possible.
The actual timing and duration of your exchange are determined by the host university’s academic calendar, not UEF’s. You cannot choose the duration yourself.
Applying
Apply for a Nordlys exchange placement in the SoleMOVE application system. The annual application period is 1–15 February. Supplementary application rounds may be held on 1–15 May.
Note about the application form: Most Nordlys exchanges are funded through Erasmus+. Because of this, the SoleMOVE system may show “Erasmus” as the exchange programme on the “Exchange study information” tab, even though you are applying for a Nordplus exchange. You can select the Nordplus application form when starting your application and then select Erasmus as the programme on that tab – this is normal.
Funding
When you go on exchange through the Nordlys network, you receive an Erasmus+ grant: 540 €/month (academic year 2025–2026). In addition, you receive travel support and 2 grant-eligible travel days.
Exception: For exchanges to the Faroe Islands, you receive a Nordplus grant consisting of a Nordplus programme contribution (€200/month) and a UEF contribution (€340/month).
The grant is paid for the months of exchange study, only for the time you are physically in the host country.
Additional support
- Top-up for students with fewer opportunities: If you belong to a group with fewer opportunities to participate in mobility (e.g. students with families, carers, students with disabilities, students with an immigrant background, or students with specific needs arising from physical or mental health conditions), you may apply for additional support.
- Green travel top-up: If you travel to and from the destination using low-emission transport (bus, train, carpooling), you may be eligible for an increased travel grant and up to 6 grant-eligible travel days. Note that ferry or ship travel is not considered green transport in the Erasmus+ programme.
More details about top-ups and travel support amounts are available in the Funding your study abroad page.
Nordlys short-term exchange grants
Nordplus grants are available for short-term courses (e.g. summer and winter schools) organised by Nordlys network partner universities. For more information, see the Nordlys short-term exchanges page.
12 months per degree level
Most Nordlys exchanges are funded through the Erasmus+ programme and follow its rules. In the Erasmus+ programme, the total duration of study and traineeship periods cannot exceed 12 months per degree level. For more information about the 12-month rule, see the FAQ page.
OLS language courses and Digital Learning Agreement
Since Nordlys exchanges follow Erasmus+ rules, you can:
- take OLS language courses (Online Language Support) before and during the exchange
- take the OLS language test in the language of your exchange studies
Also complete the Digital Learning Agreement (DLA) before the start of your exchange. The host university may require it as part of your application. You will receive the instructions on how to complete the DLA from International Mobility Services.
Important to note
The Nordplus programme requires that the courses you complete at the host university are fully credited towards your UEF degree. Many universities have subject-specific restrictions – see the list below.
