Assessment, registration and publication of study attainments

PrintAssessment of study attainments
A study attainment refers to a course that you have completed with a passing grade. The scope of the completion is expressed in credits.
Assessment is always based on the learning outcomes of the course, as described in the curriculum. The grading scale specified for the course is used in the assessment.
The teacher in charge of the course is responsible for the assessment. If the course has multiple implementations, the teacher responsible for the implementation in which you participated will assess your work.
If you have retaken an assessment, the highest grade you have received will remain in the study register.
Grading scales
Most study attainments, including theses for lower and higher university degrees as well as theses written for a minor subject, are graded on a scale of 0–5: 0 = fail, 1 = sufficient, 2 = satisfactory, 3 = good, 4 = very good, and 5 = excellent. Some achievements are graded on a pass–fail basis. The minimum requirements for a passing grade are described in the curriculum.
Licentiate theses and doctoral dissertations are graded on the following scale: pass with distinction – pass – fail.
Proficiency in the second national language is assessed on the following scale: fail – satisfactory – good (Act 424/2003 and Decree 481/2003).
When will you receive your grade?
Your course grade will appear in the student and study register Peppi within three weeks of the final assessment of the course.
The teacher in charge may extend this deadline by one week for a justified reason. If this happens, you will be notified.
The dean or the director responsible for education may further extend the deadline for particularly compelling reasons. You will be notified of this as well.
Please note: The deadlines do not include periods during which teaching is not provided or the period from 15 June to 15 August.
The following schedule applies to the announcement of results for examinations taken in EXAM rooms:
- If you take the exam before the 15th of the month, the deadline is calculated from the 15th of that month.
- If you take the exam on or after the 15th, the deadline is calculated from the 1st of the following month.
How to view your study attainments
You will receive a notification of a registered study attainment to your university email. Both passed and failed grades are recorded in the register.
The date of a study attainment is recorded as the date of the examination or the date the work was submitted for review. For theses (excluding the Bachelor’s thesis), the date of the study attainment is the date of the grading decision. For attainments based on partial completions, the recorded date is the date of the final partial completion.
The grade distribution and number of failed attainments for a course are available in Kamu on the Results of study attainments (in Finnish) platform.
Appeals
If you wish to appeal the assessment of a study attainment, you can find instructions on the university’s internal appeals process in Kamu.
Assessment is governed by Sections 32–34 and 40 of the Education Regulations.
