Once you have been granted a study right for doctoral studies, your doctoral programme will provide you with information about your next steps. Please read your doctoral programme’s instructions carefully.
First things to do
Accept your study place and complete your annual registration.
Activate your UEF user account.
- If you have problems activating your account, contact UEF Digital Services: servicedesk(at)uef.fi.
For information security reasons, start using your UEF email address for all matters related to your doctoral studies and dissertation research. The university sends study-related messages to your UEF email.
During the first three months – together with your supervisor
Complete your personal study plan for doctoral studies.
Update your research plan, for example when:
- your research plan changes or becomes more defined
- you apply for research funding.
Discuss the practical arrangements for your doctoral research with your supervisor and prepare a supervision plan to support your project and collaboration.
During your first academic year
Take part in the induction organised by your department or unit.
- If your research involves exposure work, you must be monitored by occupational health services. Read more about exposure work (link opens in new tab, UEF login required) and laboratory safety (link opens in new tab, UEF login required) on the intranet.
Register in discipline-specific as well as transferable skills courses according to your personal study plan.
- At the start of your studies, it is particularly important to take part in the course Orientation – First 100 Days.
Actively follow communications related to doctoral education.

- Your own doctoral programme’s channel on Viva Engage.
Start planning your career together with your supervisors or other people who can support your career planning.
Get involved in interesting events and meetings organised by your discipline, faculty or the university. They are there for you! Welcome to the university community!
