Yliopistossa on vapaa sivuaineiden opiskeluoikeus lukuun ottamatta aloja, joiden opiskelijavalinnassa käytetään soveltuvuuskoetta tai tasokoetta, tai joissa on muu perusteltu syy rajoittaa sivuaineopiskeluoikeutta. Sivuaineiden opiskeluoikeuden mahdolliset rajoitukset määrätään opetussuunnitelmassa. (Koulutuksen johtosääntö 13 §)

Toisaalta yliopistossa on myös tutkintoja, joiden rakenteeseen ei kuulu sivuaineita tai sivuaineet on opetussuunnitelmassa etukäteen määrätty.
