Open University teaching is integrated, which means you study on the same courses as the university’s degree students. In other words, examinations are organised according to the schedules and guidelines of each academic subject.
Examination formats may vary by subject. Check the examination instructions and schedules for your subject in the course details and in the faculty study guide. You can find more information about examinations under Examinations.
EXAM electronic examination
The university uses the EXAM electronic examination system. With EXAM, you can take your examination at a time that suits you within a period defined by the teacher. You can book an examination slot no earlier than 30 days before the examination date.
You can take EXAM examinations in the EXAM examination rooms on the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses, or as a visiting examination in the EXAM examination room of another higher education institution. Read more: EXAM guidelines.
Remote examination
On some courses, you can take a paper examination or a Moodle SEB bring-your-own-device examination as a remote examination at a location other than the Joensuu or Kuopio campus. This option is only available for certain courses and is indicated in the course description.
A remote examination is always held at the same time and under the same rules as the on-campus examination.
How to arrange a remote examination
- Check the course description to confirm that a remote examination is available.
- Arrange the examination venue and supervision yourself – you are also responsible for any costs.
- Make sure the academic subject accepts your chosen examination venue.
- Register for the examination according to the instructions for your subject.
- Include the following in your registration details:
• the name and address of the examination venue
• the name and contact details of the person responsible for the examination arrangements.
Suitable examination venues include, for example, another university, an adult education centre or another educational institution. The venue must be reliable and the examination must take place under supervised conditions. A remote examination cannot be held at, for example, your own workplace, a library or an embassy abroad.
Special arrangements for examinations
If you need special arrangements to take an examination, apply for a recommendation for individual study arrangements well in advance of your first examination.
Once you have been granted a recommendation for special arrangements, always indicate them when you register for an examination, at least 10 days before the examination date. For more information and application instructions: Individual study arrangements.
