Minor subject studies at UEF
As a UEF student, you generally have the right to freely choose your minor subjects. In some fields, access may be restricted due to proficiency tests, entrance examinations or other justified reasons.
Check the minor subject options for your degree programme in the curriculum, as some programmes have predetermined minor subjects or do not include minor subjects at all.
You can complete minor subject studies in many ways:
- minor subjects offered by faculties
- studies in internationalisation
- university networks (e.g. YUFE Alliance and UniPID)
- cross-institutional studies

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
You may have knowledge and skills acquired through earlier studies, work or hobbies. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) means that this prior learning can be assessed and approved as part of your studies.

Your feedback matters – it helps the university develop teaching, guidance, and advisory services. You can influence the university’s activities in many ways.

Study abroad and internationalisation
As a degree student, you can go international in many ways – study or do practical training abroad, or internationalise on your home campus.

Tools and online platforms
Find here a list of the central online services and platforms at UEF. Use your UEF username when signing in. Short introductory videos are included below. Kamu Tools lists the same online services.
Student register Peppi
Peppi is UEF’s student information system. In Peppi, you can:
- apply for credit transfer for previously completed studies
- obtain an electronic certificate of student status and transcript of records
- receive a digitally signed degree certificate
- make study-related room reservations
- view and edit your contact information
Changing personal information
You cannot change your name or personal identity code yourself in Peppi. If your personal details change, contact Student and Learning Services customer service (link). Changes are made based on official documents.

Study guides in Peppi
In the study guides, you can find for each academic year:
- degree structures
- course descriptions
- detailed information on courses and teaching
Browsing the study guides does not require logging in. Go to the study guides at opas.peppi.uef.fi.
Lukkarikone – your online timetable
In Lukkarikone, you can view and edit your timetable. Lukkarikone automatically retrieves data from Peppi based on the courses you have registered for.
You cannot register for courses in Lukkarikone – registrations are done in Peppi.
Using Lukkarikone
Log in to Lukkarikone with your UEF credentials. When logged in, you can:
- view your timetable and create alternative timetables
- add your timetable to your calendar using an iCal link.
You can also browse the course offerings without logging in.

Microsoft 365 Copilot
As a UEF student, you have access to the Microsoft 365 Copilot service, which includes essential tools for studying.
The service includes:
- email (Outlook)
- personal cloud storage (OneDrive)
- shared workspaces (Teams)
- a digital notebook (OneNote)
- Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- a search hub
You can also download the Office tools to your own computer and mobile devices.

Moodle – online learning environment
Moodle is an online learning environment where you can find course materials, assignments, and discussion areas.
UEF courses are primarily located in eLearn Moodle. Some courses may also be in Digicampus Moodle, a shared learning environment for Finnish higher education institutions. Your course teacher will inform you which environment is used.

Tuudo – student mobile app
Tuudo is a mobile app that brings together the most important student services. It is available throughout your studies – at the beginning of your studies it also provides current information specifically for new students.
In Tuudo, you can:
- register for teaching and exams
- follow your timetable
- view your study records
- use library services
- make study-related room reservations
Tuudo also includes campus maps and restaurant menus.
Information channels
You will stay best up to date by following the university’s main communication channels. These are the most important ones to start with.
Viva Engage – main student communication channel
Viva Engage is the university’s main channel for student communication. Join the UEF Opiskelijat // UEF Students community (requires UEF login) to receive news and announcements intended for all students.
Also follow the university-wide UEF Yhteisö // UEF Community community (requires UEF login).
Kamu – student databank
Kamu contains shared instructions for all students, service links, and current announcements. The News feed in Kamu publishes:
- university announcements for students in Finnish and English
- information on updates to instructions
- exceptional service schedules
- information about university events and services for students
Study communities – programme-specific information
A study community is a site for your own degree programme or subject, where you can find programme-specific instructions and up-to-date information. Follow at least the study communities of your major and minor subjects.
Study communities require UEF login. You can find them here (link).
Other useful channels
- Tuudo – mobile app with current announcements
- ISYY – student union website and news
- Wiikko-Ärsyke – campus-specific newsletter
- Social media channels – university and unit-level channels (e.g. library, language centre)
Exceptional situations and disruptions
Planned disruptions are announced in the service’s own communication channel and in the UEF Students community on Viva Engage.
In crisis situations, you will receive information by text message or email.
Digital support and study facilities
Oppari services – software support, printing and more
At the Oppari service desk, you can get help with:
- using your computer and UEF software
- printing and copying
- matters related to your user account

UEF e-Services
In the e-Services portal, you can handle many study-related matters electronically, request support for using various services and report any technical issues.
Under the Student Services, you can:
- buy more printing balance
- order a transcript of records or a study certificate
- submit an RPL application based on prior studies
- apply for an extension to your right to study
Logging in requires a valid UEF user account. Enter your username in the format [email protected].

Electronic exam – Exam
In the electronic exam system (Exam), you can take exams, book exams and maturity tests in automatically supervised exam rooms. You can choose the time of your exam within the given timeframe.

Username, password and multi-factor authentication
UEF user account
You log in to the university's information systems with a personal UEF user account. Activate your account right at the beginning of the semester. Instructions for activation and changing your password are available on the Digital Services website.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
In addition to your username and password, you will need multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA is enabled during your first login and requires both your password and a separate verification code.
Information security
Information security is everyone's responsibility at the university. Pay attention to information security especially when you:
- use your UEF user account
- handle files and data
- protect your devices
- work on public computers or wireless networks
- use social media

Information security guidelines
Use of artificial intelligence is studies
As a rule, you can use artificial intelligence to support your learning and the completion of study attainments. However, guidelines and restrictions on AI use vary by course. Always check the course-specific instructions.

Self-study facilities
Both campuses offer a variety of spaces for independent work.

Campus libraries
The library is at your service throughout your studies. You can find information resources, services and spaces for studying and independent work. The library is located on both the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses – check the contact details by campus.
Information retrieval
When you are looking for a book, journal or article, search the library collections using the UEF Primo search engine. UEF Primo gives you access to both printed and electronic materials. Library specialists are happy to help you with any questions related to information retrieval.
