If you are required to pay tuition fee, you should pay the fee before you register as present for the next academic year. These instructions apply to enrolled degree students (i.e., you are already studying at UEF and continuing your studies in your second year or later). If you are a first-year student, see registration instructions for new students.

Who must register
You must register annually as present or absent if you are:
- a bachelor’s or master’s degree student, or you have a combined study right leading to both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree
- student completing a postgraduate scientific degree (doctorate or licentiate).
Registration period
- The registration period for the academic year starts on 1 June and ends on 15 September.
- If you register for the spring semester only, the registration period is 1 November – 15 January.
Register in the Oili registration service
Register electronically in the Oili registration service (opens in a new tab). Log into Oili with your UEF username.
- Use the format [email protected] (without the word “student”, which is part of your email address).
- Your registration information will be transferred to Peppi.
- You can register in Oili only during the registration period.
Registration is study right specific. If you have more than one active study right, you can register as present or absent for all of them or, e.g., as present for one and as absent for another.
Registration is also term-specific. This means that you can register as being absent for one semester and present for another. Remember to take the normative duration of studies into consideration.
Registration is study right specific
In Peppi, registration is study right specific. If you have more than one active study right at UEF, register as present or absent for each one in Oili.
If you register as present for more than one study right, you only pay the student union membership fee once.
If you receive a new study right
If you already have an active study right at UEF and you receive another degree study right, do the following:
- Register for the new study right in the same website you use to accept the offered study place
- Contact the Student and Learning Services’ customer service. In your message, state whether you want to register as present or absent to your first study right. Student and Learning Services will save your registration for the first study right.
If you register for your first study right first:
- contact the Student and Learning Services’ customer service. In your message, state whether you want to register as being present or absent to your new study right. Student and Learning Services will save your registration for the new study right.

Registering as present
In most cases, you should register as present. Only if you register as present can you participate in teaching and practical training, take exams and complete a degree. In addition, only present students are eligible for student financial aid. You must also register as present for any period you spend abroad as an exchange student.
Under the Universities Act, bachelor’s and master’s degree students are members of the Student Union. Therefore, you must pay the Student Union membership fee when you register as present.
- The Student Union membership fee for the full academic year 2026–2027 is €73.
- For the autumn semester only, the fee is €36, and for the spring semester only, €37.
For licentiate and doctoral students, the Student Union membership is voluntary.
- For the 2026–2027 academic year, the Student Union membership fee for licentiate and doctoral students in 56 €.
- For the autumn semester only, the fee is 27,50 €, and for the spring semester only, the fee is 28,50 €.

Registering as absent
You can register as absent if:
- you do not intend to attend any courses, complete any studies or complete your degree during the academic year.
- you have a statutory reason for absence,
- participation in military or non-military service
- being on maternity, paternity or parental leave.
If you register as absent on the basis of a statutory reason, the duration of your studies can be extended for the statutory absence period:
- You must register as absent within the registration period in the Oili registration service (opens in a new tab).
- You must provide Student and Learning Services’ customer service with a document proving the statutory reason for your absence.
Changing your registration status
- You can change your status from present to absent only before the semester in question starts, during the registration period and only by contacting Student and Learning Services’ customer service.
- You can change your status from absent to present during the registration period in Oili, or at any time during the academic year by contacting Student and Learning Services’ customer service.

Healthcare fee for students in higher education
If you are registered as present and you are completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Finland, you are entitled to use the services of the the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS/YTHS) (opens in a new tab) and you must pay the healthcare fee for students in higher education (opens in a new tab) to Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) by the due date.
- Kela will not send you a bill. You must pay the fee on your own initiative in the Kela e-service for each term.
- You must pay the fee even if you do not use FSHS services, do not receive student financial aid, study abroad, or study remotely outside Finland.
- The due date is determined based on the date on which you register as present.
You do not have to pay the healthcare fee if you have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, from Switzerland, or from Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In this case, you must still contact Kela.

If you cannot register in the Oili registration service
Registering through Oili is the primary means of registration. If you cannot register in Oili, contact Student and Learning Services’ customer service (contact information below).
If you are a bachelor’s or master’s degree student, and wish to register as present, you can ask for the payment details for the Student Union membership fee from the Student and Learning Services’ customer service and pay the fee at your bank or through mobile banking. Alternatively, you can pay the fee at the Student Union offices (opens in a new tab). If you register this way, you must present the receipt for the payment to the Student and Learning Services’ customer service either in person or by email/postal mail (contact information below).
If your UEF account password has expired, you cannot register in Oili. Make sure to change your password before it expires. Here you can find the instructions for changing your password (opens in a new tab).
Studying abroad and registration
If you study abroad as an exchange student during the academic year, register as present at UEF for the duration of your studies abroad. This is because the courses you complete abroad are included in your UEF degree.
Registration for double degree and joint degree students
If you are completing a double degree or joint degree, you must register annually in the same way as other degree students. You must register as present for the entire duration of your studies.
The degree programme may apply to the Student Union for an exemption from the Student Union membership fee for the semesters during which you study abroad at a partner university.
Tuition fee-paying students
If you are required to pay a tuition fee, you must pay it before you can register as present for the academic year. Your annual registration may be revoked if you do not pay the tuition fee by the deadline.
- The tuition fee payment deadline is 31 August.

If you forget to register
If you do not register as present or absent during the registration period, you must apply for reinstatement of your right to study before you can continue your studies. Apply for reinstatement via Student and Learning Services’ customer service.
If you register after the registration period has ended, you will be charged a €50 handling fee. The handling fee is stipulated in the Ministry of Education decree 1082/2009.
