The library takes enhanced action to ensure quiet working conditions

We have continued to receive feedback on excess noise at the library.  The feedback concerns the Joensuu Campus Library in particular. According to the library’s Terms of use, the library user should behave in an orderly fashion within the library premises and refrain from disturbing other library users. Failure to comply with the library’s rules and regulations will result in a suspension for a fixed period of time. For example, by its own discretion, the library has the right to terminate the commitment agreement for use of 24/7 self-study facilities.

If you listen to a lecture recording or music, use headphones. If you are doing teamwork or other voice-intensive work, use the group study spaces. You can also use the Olola space in Joensuu. It is a lounge where casual conversation is encouraged and it is located next to the library’s entrance. If you are unsure which facilities are suitable for your purpose, please ensure this from the library’s customer service.

We will monitor the implementation of quiet working conditions in an intensified manner. We are working together within the University to address the problem.

Easter opening hours in the library

Joensuu and Kuopio Campus Libraries are open on Thursday 14 April 2022 8am–4pm (customer service 9am–4pm).

From Friday 15 to Monday 18 April 2022 the libraries are closed.

The Library 24/7 self-study facilities are closed 14 – 18 April 2022.

KUH Medical Library is closed on Monday 18 April 2022.

The use of library’s e-resources and interlibrary loan services blocked from Russia and Belarus

Access to library databases and other electronic materials is not possible from Russia and Belarus, since the UEF has blocked access to its electronic services requiring authentication with the university’s username and password from the Russian and Belarusian territory from 23 March 2022, due to sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus. The library’s interlibrary loan services to Russia and Belarus have stopped due to the sanctions.

The Library is invoicing borrowing fees in early April

We are invoicing unpaid borrowing service fees in early April. By paying all the unpaid fees before that, you can avoid the invoicing. Web payment in UEF Primo is a quick and easy way to pay the overdue and reservation fees online. It is possible if the amount of fees is at least three euro. You can also pay the fees at the Joensuu and Kuopio campus libraries’ customer service with a debit/credit card. Payment is not possible in the KUH Medical Library, because there is no cash service.

How to spot fake news

Eight means to identify fake news

Consider the source

Click away from the story to investigate the site, its mission and its contact info.

Check the author

Do a quick search on the author. Are they credible? Are they real?

Check the date

Reposting old news stories doesn’t mean they’re relevant to current events.

Check your biases

Consider if your own beliefs could affect your judgement.

Read beyond

Headlines can be outrageous in an effort to get clicks. What’s the whole story

Supporting sources?

Click on those links. Determine if the info given actually supports the story.

Is it a joke?

If it is too outlandish, it might be satire. Research the site and author to be sure.

Ask the experts

Consult a fact-checking site. Ask the library.

The internet and the media are bursting with stuff that make you wonder if you can believe them or not. There are tools to distinguish between information and disinformation or misinformation. One of them is media literacy.

Reserve reading room copies for overnight or weekend loan in UEF Primo

Most of the reading room copies can be borrowed overnight or for a weekend. You can now make a reservation for these books in UEF Primo. Log in to UEF Primo with your UEF username. Search the book, scroll down to the end of the locations listing and click your own library under Reserve a Reading Room Copy. Then make a reservation for the book in the overnight loan booking system, where you will also find more information.

Please note that the reserving option will only be visible if there are reading room copies in the book and only for the libraries where the reading room copy is available.

Did you know that you can return books by mail as well?

You can send books to the P. O. Box addresses of libraries at your own risk. It is noteworthy that the books should be sent from the Post Office. The library does not have a mobile phone number for arrival notices, so the package cannot be sent online. Mailed books are distributed directly to campus.

Query on the use of reference management tools

Library maps the use of various reference management tools, desires and the need for support in the future. The query is anonymous. The results of the survey will be used to support potential procurement decisions and in designing support for reference management tools.
