Rule violations at the 24/7 self-service facility of Carelia building in Joensuu

There have been rule violations at the 24/7 self-service facility of Carelia building in autumn semester. With their personal access badges, some users have let other persons to the facility. The facility has also been used for accommodation purposes. The facility is meant for self-study.

When a user gets an access badge to the 24/7 facility, they have agreed to abide the instructions for the facility. As per commitment agreement, the access badge is always personal, and the user is not allowed to give it to others. Holder of the badge cannot let other people to the facility. You can find Safety Instructions for Library 24/7 Access Badge Holder here.

Terms of use for the 24/7 self-service facilities have been made for the common safety. If a user fails to abide them, library has the right, by its own discretion, to temporarily suspend the 24/7 use or terminate a contract effective immediately.

Library hopes that the violations will not happen again. It is the common good that the 24/7 self-service facility of Carelia building can be used safely and in a good spirit also in the future.

We want to introduce: Library Bot Uffe!

We have noticed that we get heaps of messages at surprisingly late hours and on weekends. It’s understandable that there are as many approaches to working hours and methods as there are people so help is needed also after office hours. Allow us to introduce Library Bot Uffe! From now on, you can reach it at the bottom of library’s website around the clock. Please remember that Uffe is still a rookie when it comes to library know-how, but it can already help you with the most common questions that we encounter at the library.

Using Library Bot Uffe is simple: just click the options that the bot provides to find the information you need. However, occasionally it’s necessary to reach a librarian. If Uffe doesn’t know the answer to your question, we still offer the possibility to live chat with a librarian from 9-15 on weekdays. It’s always possible to leave a message through Uffe, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

We warmly encourage you to test Uffe and give us feedback. This will help us to make the library bot more useful for you!

The library is invoicing borrowing fees at the end of October

We are invoicing unpaid borrowing service fees at the end of October. By paying all the unpaid fees before that, you can avoid the invoicing. Web payment in UEF Primo is a quick and easy way to pay the overdue and reservation fees online. It is possible if the amount of fees is at least three euros. You can also pay the fees at the Joensuu and Kuopio campus libraries’ customer service with a payment card. Payment is not possible in the KUH Medical Library, because there is no cash service.

Library needs your feedback

It’s already been a while since the new academic year started. As the number of library customers increases in autumn, we would like to remind you that all feedback is warmly welcomed. It will greatly help us to improve the quality of library services. Whether your feedback consists of praises or complaints, our feedback form is the right place to share it with us.

P.S. If you haven’t visited us in a while or you’re not that familiar with us, please check our latest news on our brand-new blog post!

Maintenance at the Joensuu campus library

Renovation of the stair landings and the carpets of the stairways will continue at Joensuu Campus
Library.

The work will start from the 3rd floor’s stair landing on week 41 (10.10.2022-), and the actual demolition work will start on week 42 (17.10.2022-). Demolition that causes heavy noise will be scheduled between 6am and 11am. We will inform about the progress of the maintenance separately.

The maintenance will affect library use on following ways:

  • Every hall at the library can be entered
  • Library’s lockers on the 3rd floors stair landings will be temporarily moved to the halls 3A and 3B.

We are sorry for the inconvenience!

RefWorks use will cease at the end of 2022. Training for Zotero offered.

The reference management program RefWorks’ subscription will be ceased at the end of 2022 due to contract technical reasons. Termination of subscription applies to both the current ProQuest RefWorks and the previous version of Legacy. Unfortunately, buying a personal RefWorks licence is not possible. Add-ons Write-N-Cite and RefWorks Citation Manager that work in word processing programs also stop working. Transfer your reference now.

The library will offer support for free versions of both Mendeley and Zotero. The library gives training on Zotero reference management software. See trainings in autumn 2022.

Using legal deposit copies is now easier

Sometimes this happens: you find an interesting book on UEF Primo search service and notice that it’s available as a legal deposit copy for reading room use. From now on, you can request such books directly on UEF Primo. Once you have logged in, you can see a button for a legal deposit copy request when you have opened the search result.

After clicking the request button, type the name of the preferred pick-up library on the empty field, and send the request. You will see your request on Primo on My Request page until we process it.  Due to the limitations of the system, the pick-up library for all the requests appears as “Joensuun lainaus”. However, the material will arrive in the intended library.

We will notify you via e-mail once the legal deposit copy has arrived at the library’s customer service.

Still wondering what legal deposit copies are?

Legal deposit collection is an accumulating collection of Finnish print and electronic publications, and it’s regulated by Finnish law. The legal deposit collection includes printed material published since 1981. In addition to non-fiction books the collection includes also other material: e.g. fiction, journals, comics, sheet music and maps. Due to the high volume, the legal deposit copies are located in a separate warehouse. Please note that you can find only a portion of the legal deposit copies on UEF Primo. You can request the rest of the material with an online form.

To get the full benefit from our legal deposit copies, please check our updated website:
