Studies for exchange students
Courses for Exchange Students in Peppi in 2022-23
UEF offers a lot of courses which can be completed entirely in English. These studies are offered for the incoming exchange students and the visiting students on both campuses in Joensuu and in Kuopio.
Please note that during the COVID-19 pandemic changes in course offerings (such as transferring courses into online environment) are possible at short notice.
The exchange students are relatively free to choose courses from their own field of study, as well as from other related fields. In most cases you are welcome to choose the Master’s courses even if you have not quite yet completed your Bachelor’s degree.
Please note that if you choose courses with face-to-face teaching, the courses can be chosen from one campus only because the distance between the campuses is 150 kilometres (two hours). Only the fully online courses can be completed from the other campus.
The course information for 2022-23 is available in Peppi. (opens in a new tab)
Please make sure you will change the language in Peppi into English.
The course provides practical research work in A.I. Virtanen Institute’s research projects. The training is expected to include tasks that require academic skills. Please note, that the training in A.I. Virtanen Institute is only meant for the exchange students.

Courses for Exchange Students in Education and Adult Education, Special Education, Career Counselling in 2022-23, Joensuu campus
The goal of the study programme focusing on adult education, counselling and educational science is to develop students' identity and expertise in education and counselling from the viewpoints of life course and life-long learning. The concept of "learning society" is often seen as a synonym for a life-long learning occurring in a certain place. In the light of several international surveys (PISA, IALS), Finland is one of the most successful learning societies in the world. The study courses discuss the prerequisites for general education and the possibilities for learning needed in the era of globalisation and in the operating environments of different societies. The studies open up new viewpoints to questions pertaining to life course and social change (work, family, gender in counseling, democracy and active citizenship, globalisation, market economy). The overlapping goal of the programme is to link the theories and practices related to adult education and counselling to students' own educational objectives and aspirations in life. International students will participate in the courses alongside with the Finnish students.

During the past thousand years, the fate of Karelia has, in turn, been to come under the rule of the Vikings, Novgorod, Tsarist Russia, Sweden, Finland, the Soviet Union, and once again, Russia. Nowadays Karelia is divided between Russia (the Republic of Karelia, capital Petrozavodsk) and Finland (the province of North Karelia, capital Joensuu, and part of South Karelia). In other words, Karelia shares the complex history of Eastern Europe
The University of Eastern Finland is an important centre for the study of Karelian history and culture. It is also a centre for Baltic studies. The University has established relations with the University of Petrozavodsk, several universities in St. Petersburg and Moscow, the University of Tartu in Estonia, the University of Latvia in Riga and many universities in Lithuania.
Karelia, Russia and the Baltic Area is an international, multi-disciplinary area studies programme co-ordinated by historians at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business. The non-degree programme is offered in co-operation with the Philosophical Faculty. It is intended for both international and domestic students who have completed at least one year of university studies. The programme includes courses in History, Geography, Ethnography and Folklore, Social Sciences, Finnish and Russian.
The duration of the programme is one academic year. It is also possible for students to enrol for only one semester. The language of instruction is English. For exchange studies in Clinical Medicine at least three years of medical studies are required. In some of the courses four years of medical studies are required.
Application instructions for trainees
For clinical practice the departments usually prefer 5-6th year medical student in their selection. You should have completed at least the theoretical studies concerning the specialties applied before arrival. You can start a practical training period only if you have followed the equivalent theoretical course and passed the examination. For example, it is not possible attend to Gyneaecology and Obstetrics training if you have not studied the subject or have failed the examination. The practical training always starts on Mondays, preferably at the beginning of the month, and it is organized full-time, meaning 7-8 hours a day, Monday-Friday, 35-40 hours a week. The minimum duration of the practical training for each unit is four full weeks (6 ECTS), shorter training placements will not be organized. Students will get only ECTS credits from the practical training period, not a grade. Once the agreement is signed by the student or we have confirmation from the department, the student cannot modify his/her programme.
We are not able to accept students for the summer period (June - July) due to the lack of mentoring doctors during the summer holiday season. Please note: the number of places is limited. One exchange student per unit per month. Students are not supposed to arrange these placements on their own with the departments. Instead, all contact must go through Tarja Koponen, email: tarja.a.koponen@uef.fi.
We can offer placements mainly in Internal Medicine and Surgery. Some placements are available in Anesthesiology and Paediatrics. Upon application we need to know the clinic/clinics you are interested in. The minimum period for exchange is two months and for each unit 4 weeks.
The specialties available in surgery are:
- Orthopedics
- Traumatology
- Cardiac surgery
- Abdominal surgery (colorectal surgery and upper G-I surgery, different wards)
- Vascular surgery
- Pediatric surgery
- Urology
- Plastic surgery

At the Department of Applied Physics, we educate specialists to address major global challenges. Our research branches in three physics sub disciplines. In Aerosol Physics, the main aim is to solve the role of atmospheric aerosols in climate change. In Computational Physics, we harness hard science in mathematical modelling and in inverse problems to the service of industry. In Medical Physics, our research aims for earlier diagnosis and better therapy.
We offer education in Technical Physics both as a full Master’s degree programme and as separate courses available to exchange and visiting students.

Courses for Exchange Students in Theology in 2022-23
(opens in a new tab)
The programme provides an interdisciplinary introduction to theology, an entirety comprised of major fields in theological studies. Upon the completion of the programme, the student is capable of recognizing and making distinctions between different theological disciplines and their approaches to contemporary religious and cultural issues as well as their perspectives to classic theological problems. Students choose to focus either on the Western or the Orthodox Christian tradition. The teaching of theology at UEF is characterised by the encounter between Eastern and Western traditions and an understanding of different theological views. The entire strategy of the Department is built on this encounter. In addition to introducing students to theological disciplines in general, the programme takes a look at issues such as the common and diverse characteristics of Quranic and Biblical research. Some disciplines place a stronger emphasis on local perspectives, as the study module also aims to acquaint students with the characteristics of theological traditions within the Finnish setting.
