Getting the UEF user account
You will need a UEF username during your studies at the university to gain access to the university’s network, student register Peppi, email and Microsoft 365 services, Moodle and the online services of the university library (new tab).
Do not activate a new username, if you currently have or have previously had a UEF username (e.g. if you have studied in the open university or are a former staff member). You can start using your UEF account as soon as the student access rights are valid (check the Access rights below) by changing the password (new tab) if needed.
You can activate your UEF account as soon as the study right has been recorded in the student register and the information has transferred to the Identity Management system. A student with no previous UEF account or information in the student register will receive an automatic email from the Identity Management system (sender iam@uef.fi) as soon as the account can be activated. Preferably activate your account with your Finnish online banking codes in uef.fi/username (new tab).
You can also activate your account using the one-time-code provided in the automatic email. If you use the one-time-code for activation, you are not strongly identified and will not receive full access rights automatically (check the Access rights below). For strong identification, you can login to the activation portal later with your Finnish online banking codes.
If you do not have Finnish online banking codes, you might receive an automatic invitation for strong identification from Candour ID -service. You can also visit Digital Services’ IT Servicedesk with your official ID. Contact IT Servicedesk (new tab) for remote identification if you have not received the invitation and do not have Finnish online banking codes.
If you do not receive the automatic email from iam@uef.fi, you can still activate the account with your Finnish online banking codes as soon as the information is in the Identity Management system. Activation can be done in uef.fi/username (new tab).
UEF users must deploy Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). You can find more information in the Digital Services’ web page (new tab).
Access rights
Full access rights are granted when all of these conditions are met:
- Registration as present or absent student has been done.
- Study right is valid.
- Strong identification has been done.
If some condition is not met, your user account does not have any access rights. Full access rights are granted only after all of the conditions are met.
Your email address takes four (4) hours to form after the full access rights have been granted or you have activated the account. All UEF students who activate their username are provided a UEF email account which is set as the default email account for all UEF’s information systems. Any email messages from the university are sent to the UEF email address.
The email addresses of UEF students are always in the format username@student.uef.fi. Login to email as username@uef.fi. More information about the email in Kamu.
The access rights associated with UEF usernames are based on a valid study right and as having registered as present at the university. A student who registers as absent at the university will have access rights to the student register, but their access right to other online systems of the university will be restricted.
Students who do not register as present or absent at the university will not be granted any access rights to the university’s systems. If you fail to register as absent or present, your UEF account will be disabled as the registration period ends. Information how to reinstate your study right can be found here in Kamu.
Your UEF account will be deleted in 90 days after your last access right has ended. All of your emails and files are deleted at the same time. Note! You are responsible for backing up your files before your access rights end. Files are not retained when the username is removed from the UEF systems or from the course.
More detailed information of access rights in Heimo (new tab, login required).
Changing the password
If you have forgotten your password, you can change the password with your Finnish online banking codes in uef.fi/password (new tab) or use the M365 login page’s password reset option.
The password is valid for 13 months after it has been changed. The system will automatically send a notification to your student email address when it is time to change your password before it expires.
To change the password, you can use your valid password (new tab), use the M365 login page, verify your identity with your personal Finnish online banking codes (new tab), or visit the IT Servicedesk in person. Remember to bring your ID with you to the customer service point. Your identity will have to be authenticated from an official ID. If visiting is not possible, contact IT Servicedesk (new tab).
What is my username?
You can check your username by logging in to the Identity Manager by changing your password with your Finnish online banking codes. You can see your username under My Account.
The username and password are personal, do not let anyone use them on your behalf!
