Upcoming exceptions to Student and Learning Services customer service opening hours

14 August – 15 September 2023 the Student and Learning Services’ customer service desk on both campuses is open Mon–Fri from 10 am to 3 pm.

Contact information and regular opening hours

From 18 September 2023 onward the Student and Learning Services’ customer service desk will once again be open normally on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 3 pm.

If you are unable to visit the customer service desk during these times, please contact us by email or phone, and we can set up a meeting for a different time.

UEF’s printing service has been changed during the summer

Printing fees will return starting on 1.8.2023.

You will receive 9 euros of free printing credit (virtual credit) on 16.9. the latest if you are registered as a present degree or exchange student for the semester.

The 9 euros of virtual credit will be renewed every 16.9. or 16.1. if you are registered as present for that semester. Bought credit is not affected by the virtual credit’s renewal.

You can buy printing credit even before that from the address https://printing.uef.fi.

The fees are:

The Student2Student peer counselling service has been closed. The service operated during 2021-2023 as part of the Bridges projects funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. More accessible and efficient forms of support for students are being developed in the Student and Learning Services. UEF’s Summertime Helpline assists students at UEF in study-related issues from June 5th until August 11th 2023.

Counselling from study psychologists in June and July 2023

Study psychologists are licensed practitioners of psychology who help bachelor’s and master’s degree students in all study-related psychological issues. Counselling aims to improve students’ study wellbeing and support smooth studying. Discussions with the psychologist are always free-of-charge and confidential.

In June and July 2023, the study psychologist in Joensuu offers counselling to students on both campuses, either face-to-face in Joensuu or via video connection. See this page for further instructions on how to book a session as well as frequently asked questions about study psychologists.

Common issues that are focused on during the counselling process are e.g.

  • motivation and productivity
  • difficulties with learning or concentrating
  • time management
  • procrastination
  • stage fright and social anxiety
  • perfectionism

Study psychologists can also support you in various transition periods, such as returning to your studies after a break or transitioning into working life.

In summer 2022, the University of Eastern Finland’s Student Services piloted a new peer guidance service for Finnish-speaking degree students. The service has received very good feedback and will be continued in an expanded form in summer 2023.

The summertime helpline offers peer guidance by phone and chat for both Finnish and English-speaking degree students who are about to start their studies in the upcoming autumn semester. In addition to phone and chat, students are advised by a bot that contains answers to the most common and acute questions. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these answers first before contacting the summertime helpline. Both can be found on the same website in
Kamu Student Databank.

The summertime helpline assists new students with questions and concerns about starting their studies in Joensuu and Kuopio. Questions can be related to the campuses, orientation, campus cities, timetables and other practical matters. The service aims to respond to the needs highlighted in student surveys.

There are many questions related to the beginning of studies that may not be easily found in the university’s online materials. When the results of the student admissions are ready in the summer, many of the university’s staff are on holiday, and tutors have not yet started their activities. In this case, the new student may experience uncertainty and anxiety about the upcoming studies and feel alone with their questions. The summertime helpline responds to these needs.

The summertime helpline complements other services for new students at the university. The summertime peer guidance service does not offer any subject-specific counselling, study counselling nor answers questions related to student admissions. The service also does not offer student administration or IT advice. In these questions, the student is directed to the right service where necessary.

People working in the summertime peer guidance service are UEF students/peer tutors trained for the job.

The summertime helpline is open between 5 June and 10 August from Monday to Thursday from 12 noon to 2 pm by phone (+358 29 445 8580) and chat. You can find the chat on the front page of the Kamu Student Handbook as well as in the Orientation for new students.

Sustainability Studies Network expands – already eight Finnish higher education institutions are members

The Sustainability Studies Network established by the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Turku expands as the University of Helsinki, the University of Lapland, the University of Oulu, the University of Vaasa and LAB University of Applied Sciences join the network.

With the new members joining, the network’s course selection broadens and becomes more versatile. Through the network, students of the member higher education institutions can find courses related to sustainability and the environment that their home institution does not offer. The courses are open for all degree, doctoral and exchange students of the member higher education institutions.

“The Sustainability Studies Network offers students an opportunity to take sustainability-themed courses from different higher education institutions and faculties. Through the network, we strengthen the cooperation of the higher education institutions and increase the number of courses available to students,” head of the network’s coordination group, Senior Lecturer Outi Ratamäki from the University of Eastern Finland says.

Applications to courses are invited twice a year

The Sustainability Studies Network has been piloted by the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Turku in the academic year 2022-2023. The expanded course selection is offered from the beginning of the academic year 2023-2024.

The call for applications for the courses offered through the network will open in August 2023. In this application round, students can apply for courses offered throughout the academic year. Later in the autumn, there will also be a supplementary call for applications for courses organised in the spring semester. Students can choose one or several courses from the course listing, according to their own interest. Most courses are offered either online or remotely.

More information about the network can be found at www.kestavyysopinnot.fi/. The course selection will be updated to the webpage later this spring.

Students can study courses through the network without including them in their major or minor subject studies. If a student wants to include the courses in their degree, they should contact their supervisor at their home higher education institution.

Registration at the university for the academic year 2023-2024 starts on 1 May 2023

Annual registration for students who are already enrolled at the university (i.e. are in their second, third, etc., year of studies) starts on 1 May 2023 and ends on 15 September 2023. All bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students must register annually as being present or absent at the university within the registration period.
