Statistics: Teaching, consulting and software

Statistics courses

Statistical methods are one of the main tools for students and researchers working with empirical data. Therefore, statistics is an appropriate minor subject to a university degree at almost any field. Studies in statistics provide skills both to critically evaluate empirical research results, and to do empirical research.
For BSc and MSc students we offer Basic Statistics in English course. After completing the course, you will understand the basic ideas of statistical analysis and inference and are able to use the most simple analysis methods. After the course you will have the basic knowledge to learn more advanced methods. The course can be found under the topic Statistics courses.

After the Basic Statistics in English it is possible to study statistical methods in more advanced courses.
The statistics courses are open to all students of the university. At the University of Eastern Finland, it is possible to study statistics from basic to advanced levels.
A full list of statistics courses can be found under the topic Statistics courses.

Consulting

The statisticians at the UEF offer consulting on matters of statistical methods and their rightful use. Consulting is meant for students and researchers who have acquired the basic knowledge of the statistics, equal to the Basic statistics in English course, and whose own supervisor is unable to help them on the matter. For those writing their Master’s thesis or Bachelor’s thesis consulting is given on their supervisor’s request.

The statisticians offer help in e.g.
Formulation of research hypotheses
Planning of data collection
Construction of statistical measures
Choice of statistical method
Choice of model
Interpretation of results

Contact the statisticians by filling in a request. The form can be found under the topic Statistical consulting.

R and SPSS

Web-course in use of SPSS. The course is self-study and can be found under topic statistics courses.

R can be studied in R-language course. The course is self-study and can be found under topic statistics courses.

SPSS as well as some other software can be downloaded onto your personal computer

Teaching facilities

In the names of teaching facilities, the letters refer to the building and the first number refers to the floor. The rooms on each floor are in numerical order. For example, room AG106 is located on the Joensuu campus in the Agora building on the first floor. Auditoriums are usually numbered from 100 upwards, e.g., SN200 and SN201 are auditoriums that are located on the Kuopio campus in the Snellmania building on the second floor.

Teaching facilities are mainly at the students’ disposal during times that they are not being used for teaching. You can check the room reservation status in Tuudo, Peppi, or Lukkarikone. There are QR codes on the doors of the rooms, which you can scan to see the reservation status in Tuudo. The room search function in Lukkarikone also works without logging in.

International traineeship support from UEF faculties

For traineeships based in Europe, Erasmus+ funding is primarily used for student grants. Erasmus+ traineeship grant is applied from International Mobility Services. If you have any questions related to Erasmus+ traineeship, please contact international@uef.fi.

For traineeships outside of the EU and Erasmus+ programme, students may apply for traineeship support from their own faculty and department. If you have questions related to support awarded by faculties, please contact your departmental contact for traineeships. A list of departmental contact persons is available in Kamu in Finnish.

Erasmus funding or international traineeship support is not granted to students who receive other financial support from the UEF at the same time, or, for example, traineeship funding granted by the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI, formerly CIMO).

International traineeship support from UEF

  • Support is awarded for traineeships that are a minimum of 2 months in duration
  • The traineeship position must be full-time, min. 30 hours a week
  • Traineeships can take place in companies as well as private and public organisations
  • Faculties and departments at UEF decide independently on the amount of support/grants available. Foreign employers are not generally expected to offer paid traineeships, as this may negatively affect the student’s chances of securing a traineeship placement.

For which study fields is support available?

  • Bachelor and Master’s degree students from all study fields may apply for international traineeship support

For whom?

  • The traineeship should be included into the student’s degree as either mandatory or voluntary part of the degree.
  • The student must receive credits for the traineeship, depending on the content and duration of the traineeship, once they have completed the traineeship according to the study plan, for example by writing a traineeship report or similar according to the instructions from their department
  • An individual student may receive traineeship support to Finland and abroad only once per degree

Agreements

  • An agreement of traineeship placement must be made between the student, the employer, and the student’s department at UEF. The agreement should include information about the duration, content, guidance/advising during the traineeship and liability insurance.
  • Each department at UEF has a named traineeship contact person who approves traineeship placements and makes sure, that the traineeship fulfills criteria set for a traineeship that is to be included into the student’ degree. The departmental contact person should also be a point of contact at UEF for the employer and assist the student with the traineeship agreement.

More information about traineeships during studies at the University of Eastern Finland is available in Kamu.
