Checklist for new exchange students

BEFORE ARRIVAL

  1. Remember to confirm your study place in SoleMOVE.
  2. Find out if you need a residence permit (opens in a new tab) and if needed apply for one immediately.
  3. Apply for housing (opens in a new tab) as soon as possible.
  4. Get a travel insurance and a health insurance. If you are an EU or EEA citizen, please get the European Health Insurance Card.
  5. Plan your travelling schedule and arrival.
  6. Keep in touch with your student tutor who will contact you a few weeks before the beginning of the semester. Inform your student tutor about your arrival details. Please note that if you are a trainee and arrive during the university holiday period, a staff member from the research group might be welcoming you instead of a student tutor.
  7. Keep checking the travelling information according to the links in Arriving on Campus in Kamu.

AFTER ARRIVAL

    1. Register at the university. But before registering check the services of the Student Union (opens in a new tab) and if you wish to use them, join the Student Union by paying the membership fee (opens in a new tab). Bring along your ID.
    2. Activate your UEF user account and prove your identity at the IT Service Desk (in Joensuu Carelia Library, in Kuopio Canthia Oppari). More information on the activation of the UEF username: https://www.uef.fi/en/unit/it-services
    3. Register for the courses in Peppi (opens in a new tab).
    4. If you wish, you can download the mobile app for students: Tuudo (opens in a new tab). Tuudo includes for example course registration, timetable generator, menus for campus restaurants, schedules for local buses.
    5. Download the Tuudo mobile app and register as a library customer. You can access to the library services and a digital library card immediately. If you do not want to use Tuudo, register as a library customer with an online form and you get a traditional library card. Please, find more information about on the UEF Library website.
    6. Participate in the Orientation for International Students.
    7. Meet your academic coordinator to discuss the courses you will take.
    8. Contact the Digital and Population Data Services Agency for registration of a foreigner: to get the Finnish personal identity code and to make the Notification of Move: https://dvv.fi/en/foreigner-registration (opens in a new tab)

BEFORE ARRIVAL

  • Confirm your study place as soon as possible. Note that you can only accept one study place per academic year – once you have accepted one place, you cannot change it to another one.
  • Non-EU/EEA students: Sign your Student Agreement electronically in UEF//Sign as soon as possible. You need to sign it before you can register as a present student at UEF.
  • Non-EU/EEA students: pay the first installment of your tuition fee according to the instructions you have received by email unless you have been given an exemption from it.
  • It is possible to register as a student at UEF from May 2023 onwards, if you can pay the Student Union membership fee online.   • Find out if you need a residence permit. If needed, submit your application immediately after you have accepted your study place.
