YUFE Alliance’s (link opens in a new tab) Spring 2023 Student Journey Call is approaching. Many in UEF do not yet know what this is about – or that without a Student Journey right many of YUFE’s great possibilities for internationalization stay out of student’s reach.

Luckily there is further information available!

YUFE is organizing online information events on this subject in the near future. Via the links below you will find the registration forms to these events. YUFE will organize two more events during the spring. One in April and one in May.

Both the staff members and the students are welcome to these events.

Joensuu Campus Library introduces Sound zones and a new Reflection room for customers

Joensuu Campus Library is excited to announce two new additions to improve the customer experience for all library users. Firstly, the introduction of Sound zones in Joensuu to help customers easily identify areas within the library where they can collaborate and work together, as well as areas where they can concentrate in silence. Secondly, the library now has a new Reflection room that is multicultural and open for everyone who wants to spend some time in silence, for example, meditating or praying.

We understand that different library users have different needs when it comes to the level of noise they prefer, and our new Sound zones will help make the library a more welcoming place for everyone. Whether you’re studying for an exam, working on a group project, or simply seeking a quiet space to read, the library now has designated areas to meet your needs. Working conditions in Kuopio Campus Library have remained relatively quiet, so we consider the current signs to be sufficient there for the time being.

To help customers easily identify these zones, we have also improved our signage. Clear and easy-to-read signs have been placed throughout the library, so you can easily find the area that best suits you. “We hope that this change will further improve the library as a study environment”, says Marja Maijala, Head of Customer Services.

The new Reflection room, located at the hall 2A, is available to all library users and is designed to be a multicultural space where anyone can e.g., spend time in silence, meditate, or pray. We hope this space provides a peaceful escape from the busy day.

We also want to remind our customers that there are additional Reflection rooms available in Joensuu and Kuopio campuses. Please read more about them on Kamu (students) or Heimo (staff).

We encourage all library users to take advantage of these new additions and give us feedback. For more information about the library’s new Sound zones, please visit our website or ask one of our friendly librarians.

Concluding seminar for the Audit of UEF on 3 April 2023

The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) passed the audit conducted by the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC). Passing the audit shows that the UEF’s activities and quality system meet both the national criteria and the European quality assurance criteria for higher education institutions. UEF was awarded a quality label valid for six years.

Results of the Audit of the UEF will be introduced on concluding seminar on Monday, 3 April 2023, at 14:15–16:00. The seminar is open for the university staff and students, and it will be held in English on campuses and via Teams. Further information about the seminar can be found in news release on Yammer (requires UEF-login).

According to the audit team, an organisational culture prevails at the UEF, enabling both students and teachers to make their voice heard.

Students have been actively taken into account in the management and quality systems, and they are offered a wide variety of opportunities to participate in the activities of the university community. UEF’s commitment to the development of teaching and competence is strong. Both students and teachers gave special praise to the use of the flipped learning method.

However, not all students feel that they are included as full members of the university community. International degree students and doctoral researchers would like UEF to further develop their position.

The audit report is available on FINEEC’s audit platform.

Repair work at the Joensuu Campus Library’s 3A hall

Repair work is being done at the Joensuu Campus Library’s 3A hall. Some of our material has been temporarily moved to make room for it. As usually, you can use The Call Number Guide to locate the material or you can ask the library. The Kalevala collection is unavailable during the repair work.

Suomen Yliopistokiinteistöt Oy announces:

“There is a local barrier to the use of the premises and in its immediate vicinity there may be intermittent noise from the repair work for about 3-4 weeks. The work will start during week 9. It is estimated that the work will be completed in its entirety by April 3, 2023. The repair area is delimited by a protective wall. The books that were in the area have been moved by the library staff.
