Through the Biodiversity education network, students at the University of Eastern Finland have a possibility to take biodiversity-related courses from other universities.
The University of Eastern Finland, together with the Universities of Turku, Oulu, Helsinki and Jyväskylä and Åbo Akademi University are collaborating in biodiversity education. A common agreement on cross-institutional studies has been signed and the course catalogue for this academic year has been published. The courses are targeted mainly at students studying biology, environmental sciences, geography or agriculture and forestry but there are also courses suitable for all disciplines. These courses offer a good possibility to deepen one’s understanding of biodiversity loss and biodiversity protection.
The format of the courses differs: some courses are online, while others are field and exercise courses. All the courses are free of charge for students, and the course catalogue has been planned to complete the degrees available in students’ home universities. Through the Biodiversity education network, students have the possibility to learn new topics and collaborate with students from other universities. Before the studies, it is important to make sure that the course can be included into the degree, and the right to study the courses needs to be applied for separately for each course.
For this academic year, there are altogether 15 courses (some in Finnish), and the first courses are starting soon. The course catalogue of the network will be updated for each academic year. This year, there are courses on, for example, species identification, tropical ecology, fish biology, winter ecology and environmental protection.
Hopefully students will find these courses and eagerly widen their knowledge on courses which are not organised by their own university, hopes the coordination group of the network.
Courses offered by the Biodiversity education network in English academic year 2022-2023:
Tropical ecology
Tropical plant families
Flora of subarctic Europe
Flora of southern Europe
Biodiversity.now A
Fundamentals of conservation
Boreal winter ecology
Exercises in fish and fisheries biology
Nature under Threat 1
Nature under threat 2

Do you know where to find the ISYY office or the Student and Learning Services’ customer service desk? Are you feeling lost strolling around the campus?
Now you have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with your campus in advance! With the help of the Campus Orienteering mobile game, you get to navigate around the campus using an informative map. You can find the campus’ buildings, services, restaurants and many other places of interest marked on the map as checkpoints. By visiting a checkpoint, you can access a brief introduction and info test about the location on the map. In addition to this, some of the checkpoints have small, voluntary tasks related to the location in question. You can play the Campus Orienteering game by yourself or as a group with your friends. The game is available to play until 30 September.
So grab your phone, head over to your campus and get to know more about your surroundings through playing the Campus Orienteering game! You can find the game and its instructions in Moodle by using the following link: https://moodle.uef.fi/course/view.php?id=37047

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) has efficiently reduced phishing of UEF user accounts and inflicted security breaches. All UEF user accounts use multi-factor authentication when logging into email and other O365 services (applies to staff members and comparable users, students, CCL students and external users).
In order to guarantee information security, it is necessary to introduce MFA into further services. Starting 15 Aug 2022, MFA has been enabled with some other services that use UEF user accounts or HAKA authentication to log in.
How may this change affect you?
When logging into UEF services using Shibboleth or HAKA authentication with a UEF user account, you have to authorize the login with your mobile device. UEF email service, for example, uses a similar method.
Shibboleth/HAKA services include:
Staff applications archive.uef.fi, Certia Servicedesk, eParking.fi, M2, Opintopolku, ResearchProfessional database, Rondo, SoleTM, Academy of Finland eServices Sara, UEF Connect (website updates), Webropol
Student applications Digicampus Moodle, Primo (library), SoleMove, wiki.uef.fi
Shibboleth enabled services with multi-factor authentication have been tested during the summer. Enabling MFA doesn’t have significant effects for the end user. Even though MFA improves information security, its introduction would seem to improve the end user experience. Issues with two services were identified during the testing period and they have been excluded from MFA.
If you experience any issues with one of these services, please use the eServices portal to report it (https://asiointi.uef.fi -> Report IT issue)
Recommendation: Use the Authenticator app with MFA
If you have a smartphone, install the Authenticator app and use it with UEF MFA. It’s more secure and user friendly than SMS authentication.
Registration for Language Centre’s autumn semester courses opens on 1.8.2022 in Peppi (peppi.uef.fi).
If the course starts before 11.9.2022, registration ends two workdays before the course starts. If the course begins on 12.9.2022 or later in the first period, registration ends on Thu 8 September. For courses in the second period, registration ends 10 days before the course starts.
For degree students (Bachelor, Master and PhD), we offer degree courses in English and in Finnish as well as optional courses. For exchange students, we offer the courses Finnish 1A and Chinese 1. Exchange students can join other Finnish courses if there is room in the group. Both degree students and exchange students can choose courses from the KiVANET network.
If you are new to Finnish language, start with our beginner’s course, Finnish 1A. Finnish 1A is a self-study module. Registration is open throughout the academic year, and you can start this course as soon as you register in Peppi.
Students register for degree courses in Peppi through their personal study plan (PSP). Students may also register for courses that are not included in their PSP by searching these courses in Peppi.
NB! In case you have started your studies before Autumn 2022 and the new curriculum 2022–2025, please remember to add the new equivalent courses to your personal study plan (PSP).
