The University of Eastern Finland has opened virtual YUFE Help Desks, where students in various fields, with the support of their instructors, answer citizens’ questions and advise them in Finnish and English. The free helpdesks are part of the YUFE (Young Universities for the Future of Europe) Alliance and can be found at www.uef.fi/en/yufe-helpdesk.
The first help desks to start operating are the language help desk, which provides translation and language support services, and the help desk focusing on diversity and inclusivity. You can also turn to the help desks with questions regarding all the activities of the YUFE Alliance. The services are continuously developed, and topics will be added based on interest.
You can send a short text to the English <> Finnish Language Help Desk for translation or proofreading. The help desk also deals with questions related to the use of the English language and other language problems. The help desk uses expertise of two doctoral students of the University of Eastern Finland, Tuuli Ahonen, a doctoral researcher in the field of English and translation, and Katarzyna Wisniewska, an early-stage researcher in the field of foreign languages and translation studies. The services are open to everyone, and in particular to students, who, for example, needs their theses’ abstracts proofread.
The Diversity and Inclusivity Help Desk provides answers to questions about diversity, respect, listening and inclusion, as well as involvement and inclusion of members in a diverse community.
Together, the universities of the YUFE Alliance want to be a leading example of an open, student-centred and inclusive European university that recognises the importance of diversity and inclusion for both the universities and the surrounding society. During spring, the Diversity and Inclusivity Help Desk will be run by designer Senni Pykäläinen and YUFE student Glyd Jun Aranes.
Anyone can send questions or service requests to the help desks using an electronic form, and answers can be obtained either by e-mail or published on a website. You can also ask a question and get an answer completely anonymously. The services will respond to inquiries on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to develop the services, feedback is requested via an electronic form, which will be provided alongside an e-mail response.
Students participating in the help desks and other YUFE civic activities can earn a YUFE Civic Star badge as part of the YUFE Star System, which rewards students for learning outcomes beyond their actual studies.

In response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, the University of Eastern Finland will make it possible for Ukrainian degree students to apply for admission to the University of Eastern Finland under a separate right to study, and to apply for a grant. The call for applications is aimed at students who have an existing, valid right to study at a Ukrainian university and Ukrainian citizenship, and whose studies have been discontinued due to the war.
“We want to take concrete action in this very serious situation and to support Ukrainians suffering from the war. We are allocating a total of 100,000 euros to a grant scheme aimed at Ukrainian students, making it possible to continue academic studies in Finland,” the University of Eastern Finland’s Academic Rector Tapio Määttä says.
In the initial phase, a separate study right can be granted to 20 Ukrainian students. Study rights will be granted based on applicants’ academic performance and the compatibility of their earlier studies with those offered by the University of Eastern Finland. Those who are granted a separate right to study at the University of Eastern Finland are also eligible to apply for a grant to cover costs of living and travel. Applicants are expected to be fluent in English.
Applications from Ukrainian students for admission to the University of Eastern Finland under a separate right to study are, in this initial phase, accepted from 8 March 2022 to 21 March 2022. Students admitted to the university may start their studies already on 1 April 2022, and their study right will be valid until 31 July 2023. Studies will be offered on the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses of the University of Eastern Finland.
Ukrainian students who have been granted a separate study right will, later on, have the opportunity to apply for admission to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes of the University of Eastern Finland, provided that they meet the eligibility and admissions criteria.

Katri Ruth, Study Psychologist at the University of Eastern Finland, shares advices how we can foster compassion in our community and alleviate tensions, both of the body and of the mind, during the war events in Ukraine.
“Fostering compassionate interaction as part of our work and study culture is particularly important right now. Communicating encouragement and caring will alleviate tensions, both of the body and of the mind. We can foster compassion in our community by doing these simple things: We ask one another about how we are doing and feeling. We can take a moment to listen to one another. We can ask how we can help with small things. We can speak nicely and with compassion to ourselves. We should also remember our need to recover and be present for the people close to us”, Katri Ruth writes.
For all students who feel worried about the events in Ukraine, this is a useful blog post that you should read: https://blogs.uef.fi/puheenvuoroja/2022/03/02/academic-community-touched-by-war/.
