University of Eastern Finland’s current face mask recommendation remains unchanged

The University of Eastern Finland’s current face mask recommendation remains unchanged because the coronavirus situation especially in the Kuopio area continues to be challenging, and the regional coronavirus coordination group for North Savo has issued a face mask recommendation. In addition, there is a slight increase in infections in North Karelia.

The university keeps monitoring the situation and will update its face mask recommendation as deemed necessary.

Take this commuting survey by 6 October 2021 and have an impact on the university’s sustainability work!

Dear student of the University of Eastern Finland,

Last year we calculated the carbon footprint of the university for the first time. However, the impact of commuting between the home and the workplace couldn’t be estimated due to a lack of the necessary data. Therefore, we now invite you to fill out this commuting survey that will help us estimate the climate impacts of student commuting. The results can also be used in improving commuting conditions and sustainability reporting. This survey is only meant for UEF students, a similar survey was carried out for the staff already in the spring.

Completing the survey is voluntary. The responses are anonymous, and they will be treated confidentially. By leaving your contact information at the end of the survey you have a chance to win a small price.

Filling out the survey is easy and will take only a few minutes. You can access the commuting survey here.

Please answer the survey by Wednesday 6 October 2021.

Contact tracing in Kuopio is overwhelmed: if you attended student events last week and haven’t received two doses of vaccine, please stay under quarantine-like conditions

Contact tracing in Kuopio is currently overwhelmed and the health authorities will not be able to contact everyone who has been exposed to the coronavirus personally. The health authorities ask that everyone who attended student events in Kuopio last week and who haven’t received two doses of vaccine would voluntarily stay under quarantine-like conditions until the end of next week, i.e., refrain from visiting public places and maintain physical distance from others.

  • If you have not yet received two doses of vaccine and you have symptoms of COVID-19, please get tested.
  • If you learn that you have been exposed to the coronavirus and you have symptoms of COVID-19, please get tested.
  • Do not go out in public or come to the campus, if you have any symptoms. Remember to wear a mask on your way to get tested.

University of Eastern Finland is taking action in response to the coronavirus situation in Kuopio

The University of Eastern Finland is taking action in response to the coronavirus exposures that took place in connection with student events in Kuopio last week. First- and second-year students of medicine and dentistry, and first-year students of biomedicine and nutrition have switched to online study for the following two weeks. The university is monitoring the situation and works in close collaboration with the City of Kuopio’s health authorities. Further action will be taken as needed.

“The message from the health authorities is that all those who attended student events in Kuopio last week should stay under in quarantine-like conditions, i.e., refrain from visiting public places and maintain physical distance from others. Also, it is recommended to get tested for COVID-19 even at the slightest sight of symptoms,” Director of Administration Tuomo Meriläinen says.

Last week’s student events were organised responsibly, with great attention to health security.

“Unfortunately, the coronavirus spreads also in pre- and after-parties, and health security should be kept in mind at all times. Better vaccination coverage will make our lives easier in the future. In fact, easily accessible walk-in vaccination events are organised in both Kuopio and Joensuu even this week, and I urge everyone to seize this opportunity,” Meriläinen notes.

Potential coronavirus exposure in students’ welcoming event in Kuopio on 7 September

Exposure to the coronavirus has been possible in connection with 1st-year medical students’ welcoming event held outdoors in Kuopio on 7 September 2021. According to the current estimate, more than 100 people have been exposed. Those exposed to the coronavirus have been informed of the matter, and they will be contacted by the health authorities. Due to the large number of those exposed, all 1st-year students of medicine will switch to online study at least for the duration of week 37.

It is recommended that anyone experiencing symptoms, even mild ones, get tested.
