University of Eastern Finland offers admission to 20 Ukrainian students

In response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, the University of Eastern Finland will make it possible for Ukrainian degree students to apply for admission to the University of Eastern Finland under a separate right to study, and to apply for a grant. The call for applications is aimed at students who have an existing, valid right to study at a Ukrainian university and Ukrainian citizenship, and whose studies have been discontinued due to the war.

“We want to take concrete action in this very serious situation and to support Ukrainians suffering from the war. We are allocating a total of 100,000 euros to a grant scheme aimed at Ukrainian students, making it possible to continue academic studies in Finland,” the University of Eastern Finland’s Academic Rector Tapio Määttä says.

In the initial phase, a separate study right can be granted to 20 Ukrainian students. Study rights will be granted based on applicants’ academic performance and the compatibility of their earlier studies with those offered by the University of Eastern Finland. Those who are granted a separate right to study at the University of Eastern Finland are also eligible to apply for a grant to cover costs of living and travel. Applicants are expected to be fluent in English.

Applications from Ukrainian students for admission to the University of Eastern Finland under a separate right to study are, in this initial phase, accepted from 8 March 2022 to 21 March 2022. Students admitted to the university may start their studies already on 1 April 2022, and their study right will be valid until 31 July 2023. Studies will be offered on the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses of the University of Eastern Finland.

Ukrainian students who have been granted a separate study right will, later on, have the opportunity to apply for admission to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes of the University of Eastern Finland, provided that they meet the eligibility and admissions criteria.

Academic community touched by war – how to get help and support?

Katri Ruth, Study Psychologist at the University of Eastern Finland, shares advices how we can foster compassion in our community and alleviate tensions, both of the body and of the mind, during the war events in Ukraine.

“Fostering compassionate interaction as part of our work and study culture is particularly important right now. Communicating encouragement and caring will alleviate tensions, both of the body and of the mind. We can foster compassion in our community by doing these simple things: We ask one another about how we are doing and feeling. We can take a moment to listen to one another. We can ask how we can help with small things. We can speak nicely and with compassion to ourselves. We should also remember our need to recover and be present for the people close to us”, Katri Ruth writes.

For all students who feel worried about the events in Ukraine, this is a useful blog post that you should read: https://blogs.uef.fi/puheenvuoroja/2022/03/02/academic-community-touched-by-war/.

Working, studying and communicable diseases in the university’s facilities

Communicable diseases refer to respiratory infections, various poxes and stomach flu, for example.

You may work on campus only when you are healthy. If you have symptoms of a respiratory infection or, for example, stomach flu, stay home. Contact your supervisor or teacher responsible for your course about your absence from work or, if your condition allows, about your switch to remote work.

Returning to campus after illness:

If your infection is not caused by the coronavirus, you can return to the campus once your symptoms have subsided and your coronavirus test (e.g., an at-home test) is negative.

After a positive coronavirus test, you can return to the campus when you are without symptoms or when your doctor has given you permission to return.

Being without symptoms means, according to THL’s definition that you have no fever and the other symptoms are clearly in decline. If the only symptom is a change in your sense of smell or taste or an irritative cough, there is no need to continue isolation.

UEF expresses support for Ukrainian students and staff members

The University of Eastern Finland condemns Russia’s military action in Ukraine and expresses its support for Ukrainian students and staff members.

The University of Eastern Finland is an international and multicultural community with students and staff members representing over 100 nationalities. The recent events in Ukraine are causing concern within our community.

There are Ukrainian students, doctoral researchers and staff members in our academic community, and the university will contact them to offer support. We wish to express our support to them and their families, and to everyone in our academic community who are concerned about the events in Ukraine. More than ever, we need to stand together despite our roots and backgrounds and offer our support to those in need.

The university has set up a team to coordinate actions resulting from the situation in Ukraine and is preparing support measures.

Support is available to students and staff members. A list of providers of help for students is available in Kamu, and staff members may turn to the occupational healthcare provider, Terveystalo.

Problem with the SPSS licenses for home computers

University of Eastern Finland has a contract with a software provider that delivers the licenses from IBM for SPSS. We are still waiting for the home computer licenses ordered in January.

During the wait, SPSS can be used in two ways:

1. On the campus computers

2. Via Windows Virtual Desktop on your own computer, either install the app or use via a browser

The Windows Virtual desktop acts like a virtual desktop of a campus computer. More information on how to deploy Windows Virtual Desktop in Heimo (login by using UEF-username): https://studentuef.sharepoint.com/sites/heimo_en/services/software-and-licenses/Pages/Software-for-home-computers.aspx
