Bright light lamps in Studentia, Kuopio campus

Beat the winter blues with the bright light therapy lamps. They are available in Studentia Kappeli (upstairs, the same entrance as for sporthall). Doors are open at 7 am. You can also use the kitchen, for example to make some tea and to warm your breakfast.
The bright light is a 2,500 -10 000 lux. The light resembles sunlight, but it’s UV-free. The bright light lamp is medically certified to treat SAD (seasonal affective disorder). The lamps are offered by the Student Health Servcies (YTHS) and the Student health co-operation team of Kuopio Campus.

Here’s how to get the most out of bright light therapy:

  • Use the bright light lamp in the morning time.
  • Use the bright light lamp about 30-60 minutes each morning. At the first time use the lamp only 10 minutes.
  • Right distance of the lamp to your eyes is about 85–200 centimetres.
  • Don’t stare straight to the light. You can multitask with bright light therapy for example read a book.
  • You get the best effect when you use lamps between 5:30-9:00 a clock.

An appeal for ISYY’s members: Vote in the Representative Council elections

The Central Election Committee of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) appeals to every member of ISYY to vote in the Representative Council elections.

Don’t miss this chance; give your vote to your favorite candidate! You can vote via the electronic ballot box (registering with the UEF username).

Voting matters. The Representative Council members have the power to decide about matters concerning the Student Union and affect on your time as a student in the University as well as the services offered to you by the Student Union. Thus, voting will affect your life directly! If you don’t know yet whom to vote to, get acquainted with candidates with the voting aid.

The Representative Council makes significant decisions concerning your life as a student

The Representative Council of the Student Union consists of 39 Representative Council members, “edators”, elected through elections. The Representative Council makes significant decisions concerning all students, for example the Student Union budget, membership fee, action plan, rules, alignments, and so on. The action plan and the alignments for example define, how the Student Union will operate during the present year and what matters will especially be enhanced – for example how the student housing should be developed?

Put simply, the Student Union could be seen as a nation where students are its citizens. The citizens=students elect the Parliament=Representative Council, who then elect the Committees and the Government=Executive Board. And that’s all there is to it!

In the Representative Council elections, even a one vote can make a difference and you are the one who decides who to vote for!

Use Your Vote in the European Elections 2019!

This spring is a good time to make a difference. We have already voted in the Finnish Parliamentary Elections, and now we have a chance to set the course of the European Parliament for the next five years!

What Elections?

The European Parliament is one of the legislative organs of the European Union. EU citizens elect members of the parliament in direct elections held in every member state every five years. The previous elections were held in 2014.

Advance voting for the European Elections is held from the 15th to 21st of May in Finland, and from the 15th to 18th of May in other countries. In Finland, the election day is Sunday the 26th of May.

A citizen of another EU Member State living in Finland may choose to vote in the European Parliamentary elections in Finland. This requires, however, that he or she has enrolled (until 7th of March) with the voting register in Finland beforehand to the local register office. If you are allowed to vote for another EU Member State in Finland, you should get the instructions to vote from your relevant authority of your home country.

Everyone who is entitled to vote may vote at a general advance polling station, regardless of their municipality of residence. Anyone who is entitled to vote may also vote abroad at Finnish embassies. On election day, you must vote at the polling station assigned to you!

ISYY’s Election Events in Joensuu and Kuopio

What are the European Elections? What does the European Parliament do? How doest the decision-making affect you? If you are unsure, no worries, ISYY organises on both of its campuses election events, where you can find out more about the European Parliament and the elections.

Both campuses will have election infos on Tuesday the 14th of May at Carelia and Snellmania lobbies from 10 am to 2 pm. We are serving some coffee and tea!

ISYY is also organising an advance voting event for all students on Wednesday the 15th of May at 2 pm both in Joensuu and Kuopio. The advance voting event in Joensuu starts in front of the Carelia building, where some coffee and tea is served. Come early, because at 2 pm we are moving on to the polling station in the Joensuu Main Library. In Kuopio Campus, the event is organised in the polling station at Lukema. Come to vote and get some coffee, tea and ISYY’s Vote! overall badge!
