A message from Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare to students

Student, protecting yourself from coronavirus also protects your roommate, grandparents and siblings

It is a fact that we will have to live with coronavirus for some time still. What’s more important is knowing the best ways to prevent infections. By protecting yourself from infection you also protect your family and friends.

Even if you do not personally belong to a coronavirus risk group, it is important to consider those who could fall seriously ill due to the disease.

You may have a friend with cancer, an elderly grandparent, or a little sister with bad asthma.

There are over one million people in the coronavirus risk group in Finland, which means that we encounter them every day: at home, at school, at the store, at the library or at a restaurant.

Since people with coronavirus can be infectious days before symptoms begin, any one of us can unknowingly spread the virus. Each one of us is responsible for protecting those at risk.

Please, party virtually, outdoors or in small groups

Admittedly, remote parties for new students don’t sound the most exciting, but you can still have fun during coronavirus. Be inventive and show a good example by organising parties remotely. Share your experiences of successful digital events with others.

Please, favour meeting outdoors instead of indoors, even if the weather is not optimal. And keep it small. The fewer people, the smaller the risk of spreading infections.

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) collects information on the spread of coronavirus. Infections have spread at family gatherings, team sports events and practice, evening and night life, workplaces, and student parties. And after being infected, people often spread the virus to their family.

Checklist for everyday life with coronavirus

  • Stay in touch with your fellow students and encourage them to get through this challenging time.
  • The student community has strength that will help you cope. Lean on it if you feel alone.
  • Your educational institution has provided thorough instructions on hygiene, safe distances, downloading the Koronavilkku app, bigger gatherings and, if necessary, the use of masks – please follow these instructions.
  • Have student organisation meetings and other gatherings remotely.
  • Student associations reach out to their members almost daily; please encourage each other to be responsible.
  • If possible, favour remote exams and exam aquariums. Remember good hygiene so that others can safely use the facilities after you.
  • Do not attend or organise any large student parties.

Our materials are freely available

The hygiene, safe distance and mask instructions prepared by THL are available in our material bank to download and print freely. They can also be used as inspiration in your organisation’s communications.

Sincerely,
Mika Salminen
Director of the Health Security department and alumnus of the University of Helsinki

Multi-factor authentication will be deployed for students

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) will be deployed to the staff and students of UEF in phases by June 2021. MFA enables reliable identification of the Office 365 users of the university and prevents the phishing and abuse of usernames.

Who could you listen to?

The number of mental health-related sick leaves of employees has increased sharply. For the first time, mental disorders surpassed musculoskeletal diseases as the main cause for retirement on a disability pension. Similarly, more and more students suffer from mental health problems, according to the Finnish Student Health and Wellbeing Survey. The numbers of mental health-related problems are higher than ever before and are also the most common cause of disability. Measures supporting mental health and strengthening both work and study ability, are solutions for guaranteeing work ability in the future.

UEF participates in the currently ongoing Greenlight Listening campaign, as well as in the World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2020!  We encourage everybody to attentive listening in everyday encounters. Simply by listening we can positively affect one’s wellbeing and help to build a more inclusive society.

University of Eastern Finland tightens its recommendation on the use of face masks from 8 October; in-person teaching in the spring semester 2021 will be offered as possible

The University of Eastern Finland responds to the escalation of the COVID-19 situation in its campus cities by recommending the use of face masks in all facilities with several people present, including on lectures. The new recommendation will enter into force on Thursday, 8 October 2020. The university’s earlier recommendation only pertained to situations where maintaining a safe distance to others is not possible.

The University of Eastern Finland provides face masks for its staff and students working and studying on campus free of charge. Face masks are available in the main lobbies of all campus buildings. The face masks the university provides are surgical masks (type II).

Teaching arrangements in the spring semester 2021

In the spring semester 2021, teaching will be planned so that physical distancing (1.5–2 m) is possible, and a maximum of 50 people can be in the room at the same time. In-person teaching will primarily be offered to students who started their studies in autumn 2020. In-person teaching will also be offered on courses where online teaching is not possible. Otherwise, in-person teaching is sought to be offered as possible, while taking safety aspects into consideration. This applies to courses offered both in Finnish and in a foreign language.

In the spring semester 2021, registration for courses is mandatory, and teachers must keep lists of students attending in-person teaching.

In the spring semester, general exams continue not to be held, but it is for teachers to hold and supervise exams for small groups, while taking safety distances into consideration. The maximum number of people permitted in a room is 50 persons.

Timetable for planning teaching and communication

  • 30 October: Dean’s decision and communication on which courses will be offered as in-person teaching and which ones online.
  • 30 November: Updated information on course timetables and facilities for January-February will be available to students in WebOodi.
  • 17 December:  Updated information on course timetables and facilities for March–May will be available to students in WebOodi.

Entrance examinations

The University of Eastern Finland will publish the admissions criteria of next spring’s joint admissions in Opintopolku by the end of October.

Updated recommendation on the use of face masks:

The University of Eastern Finland’s face mask recommendation to staff and students (effective as from 8 October 2020)

The University of Eastern Finland recommends that face masks be used in all facilities with several people present, including on lectures. The university’s earlier recommendation only pertained to situations where maintaining a safe distance to others is not possible.

For staff members, face masks are also provided for work-related travel by public transportation or ride shares. The university does not provide masks for commuting to and from work.

In traineeships/internships the security guidelines of the training place (e.g. a hospital) must be adhered to.

The face masks provided by the university are to be used on campus, i.e. they are not for personal use.

If need be, the university’s face mask recommendation will be updated in accordance with national recommendations.

The face masks the university provides are surgical masks (type II).

How to use a face mask

  • Put the mask on with clean hands.
  • Do not touch the mask while it is on.
  • Take the mask off by the straps with clean hands and discard the used mask. Wash your hands.

Sports Afternoon programme has been canceled for Wednesday, 7 October 2020

By the decision of the University of Eastern Finland, Karelia University of Applied Sciences and Savonia University of Applied Sciences, the Sports Afternoon programme has been canceled on Wednesday, 7 October 2020. The reason for the cancellation is the rapid progression of the corona epidemic and the consequent increase in the risk of infection.

An exception to the above are forms of exercise which have been advertised via SYKETTÄ University Sports and which people have reserved and paid for themselves (e.g. online exercise classes and riding lessons; please contact the University Sports Coordinators for further information). In addition, workplace communities’ own, previously agreed small-scale events for the Sports Afternoon can still be held, while paying attention to the safety guidelines.

Wednesday 7 October 2020 is still free from teaching after 12 noon, so we encourage everyone to move independently and at their own risk, while taking safety issues into account.
