Checklist for new exchange students
BEFORE ARRIVAL
- Remember to confirm your study place in SoleMOVE.
- Find out if you need a visa (opens in a new tab) or a residence permit (opens in a new tab) and if needed apply for one immediately.
- Apply for housing (opens in a new tab) as soon as possible.
- Get a travel insurance and a health insurance. If you are an EU or EEA citizen, please get the European Health Insurance Card.
- Plan your travelling schedule and arrival.
- Register at the university. But before registering check the services of the Student Union (opens in a new tab) and if you wish to use them, join the Student Union by paying the membership fee (opens in a new tab).
- Keep in touch with your student tutor who will contact you a few weeks before the beginning of the semester. Inform your student tutor about your arrival details. Please note that if you are a trainee and arrive during the university holiday period, a staff member from the research group might be welcoming you instead of a student tutor.
- Keep checking the travelling information according to the links in Arriving on Campus in Kamu.
AFTER ARRIVAL

- Activate your UEF user account and prove your identity at the IT Service Desk (in Joensuu Carelia Library, in Kuopio Canthia Oppari). More information on the activation of the UEF username: https://www.uef.fi/en/unit/it-services
- Register for the courses in Peppi (opens in a new tab).
- If you wish, you can download the mobile app for students: Tuudo (opens in a new tab). Tuudo includes for example course registration, timetable generator, menus for campus restaurants, schedules for local buses.
- Download the Tuudo mobile app and register as a library customer. You can access to the library services and a digital library card immediately. If you do not want to use Tuudo, register as a library customer with an online form and you get a traditional library card. Please, find more information about on the UEF Library website.
- Participate in the Orientation for International Students.
- Meet your academic coordinator to discuss the courses you will take.
- Contact the Digital and Population Data Services Agency for registration of a foreigner: to get the Finnish personal identity code and to make the Notification of Move: https://dvv.fi/en/foreigner-registration (opens in a new tab). Remember to inform the Student and Learning Services' Customer Service of your Personal when you have received the code.
- Start studying and enjoying the active student life at UEF. For example by

- Joining the UEF Sports programme SYKETTÄ in Joensuu and SYKETTÄ in Kuopio (links open in a new tab).
- Checking your own Subject-Specific Student Association from the student association list (link opens in a new tab) and joining the students of your own study field in various events.
Checklist for new Master's Degree students
BEFORE ARRIVAL
- Confirm your study place on Studyinfo as soon as possible. The deadline is 10 July 2025.
- Non-EU/EEA students: apply for a residence permit (opens in a new tab) as soon as possible.
- If you have a conditional study offer, provide verification of your educational documents (opens in a new tab) by 30 May. If you fail to do this, the conditional study offer will be cancelled.
- Non-EU/EEA students: pay the tuition fee via Flywire (opens in a new tab). The Early Bird discount ends on 11 June 2025.
- Apply for housing in your campus city.
- Register as a present student (opens in a new tab) from 1 June onwards. The online registration period ends 23 Aug and in person registration can be done by 15 Sept. Pay the Student Union membership fee (opens in a new tab) before the registration.
- Obtain a health insurance and a travel insurance. If you are an EU or EEA citizen, please get the European Health Insurance Card.

- Keep in touch with your programme coordinator and your student tutor. Inform your student tutor about your arrival details.

- Join the Orientation Programme for International Students (opens in a new tab). In addition to the general orientation session, please don't miss the programme specific session where you can meet your programme coordinator (opens in a new tab).
- Contact the Digital and Population Data Services Agency for registration of a foreigner: to get the Finnish personal identity code, to have the Municipality of Residence (for non-EU citizens), and to make the Notification of Move: https://dvv.fi/en/foreigner-registration (opens in a new tab). Inform the Student and Learning Services' Customer Service of your Personal Identity Code as soon as you receive it.
- Pay the Student Health Care fee (opens in a new tab) online (35.60 € per semester) by 30 September.
