Activating your UEF user account for the university’s information systems

All UEF students need a UEF user account. You need the account to, for example:

  • log in to the university’s information systems
  • use your UEF email
  • sign up for courses and exams

After you have received a confirmation email about your successfull registration, you will need to follow these steps in order to get a UEF user account (instructions are also in the confirmation email):

  1. Follow the instructions for getting a UEF user account
  2. Complete strong identification. This is a security step required by Finnish regulations.
  3. Register as an MFA (multi-factor authentication) user. MFA adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a second verification step (for example, a code sent to your phone) when you log in.

Here you can find more detailed information on activating your UEF user account (opens in a new tab).

Your UEF user account will start working once all of the following conditions are met:

  • you have registered as present
  • your study right has started
  • you have activated the account
  • you have been strongly identified and
  • you have registered as an MFA user.

If you have any questions regarding activating your account, please contact the Digital Services (opens in a new tab).

Healthcare fee for higher education students

If you are registered as present at a Finnish higher education institurion, you are entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) (opens in a new tab) and must pay the healthcare fee for students in higher education (opens in a new tab) to Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) by the due date.

You must pay the fee even if you:

  • are studying remotely or abroad
  • do not use FSHS services
  • do not receive Finnish student financial aid

Who does not have to pay the fee

You do not have to pay the healthcare fee if you have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, Switzerland, or Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In this case, you must still contact Kela, and you can still use the FSHS services.

How to pay

Kela will not send you a bill. You must pay the fee on your own initiative though the Kela e-service for each academic term. The due date for is determined by the date you register as present.

See information on the healthcare fee and the due dates as well as the payment instructions (opens in a new tab).

Apply for a Finnish personal identity code

If you stay in Finland for longer than three months, you should obtain a Finnish personal identity code (henkilötunnus in Finnish). The identity code is important because it is used to transfer information between the university and various services. You will also need it for everyday matters such as:

  • interact with Finnish authorities
  • use the online services of FSHS, HSL and Studyinfo.fi
  • open a bank account
  • visiting a hospital or health centre

It is highly recommended that you apply for the identity code as early as possible.

Students from EU/EEA countries

As an EU/EEA citizen, you do not need a residence permit, but you should register your residency in Finland by visiting the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) (opens in a new tab) after your registration to the university is confirmed. Ask to be registered in the Finnish Population Information System and you will receive your Finnish personal identity code.

Students from non-EU/ETA countries

When you are granted a residence permit or a residence card, or when your right of residence is registered by the Finnish Immigration Service, your personal information will in most cases be automatically registered in the Finnish Population Information System. You will usually receive your Finnish personal identity code at the same time

If you did not receive a personal identity code together with your residence permit, visit the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) (opens in a new tab) during the first three months of your stay. Ask to be registered in the Finnish Population Information System – this means that you will be issued a personal identity code and your Finnish postal address will be registered.

After you receive your identity code

Once you have your identity code, it is very importat that you inform the Student and Learning Services’ customer service (contact information at the bottom of this page) so that it can be saved to the student register. You can do this in two ways:

  • In person: Visit the office and present your identity card or another document that shows your identity code.
  • By email: Contact the Student and Learning Services’ customer service and request instructions for sending the identity code in an encrypted email message. Wait for the instructions before sending your identity code – do not include the code in an unencrypted email for security reasons.

How to get a student card

Once you have registered as present and paid the Student Union (ISYY) membership fee, you can order a student card. You can choose between:

  • a plastic student card
  • a digital student card on your phone (most common)

Order your student card from Tuudo, Frank or Slice (opens in a new tab)

Before you receive your student card, you can get a meal discount at the campus restaurants with a certificate of study. You will receive the certificate as an attachment in the confirmation email once your registration is complete

Student card and student benefits

As a member of the Student Union (opens in a new tab), you are entitled to a student ID card and the benefits and services that come with it. ISYY, the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland is responsible for looking out for the interests and rights of the university’s students.

Ordering a student card

The student card is your official student ID. The student card also gives you access to several benefits and discounts.

Students who have registered as present and have paid the Student Union (ISYY) membership fee may order a student card. There are several student card options you can use (Tuudo, Slice or Frank). Most students download a digital student card to their phones, but if you want, you can also order a plastic student card. You can order your student card from TuudoFrank or Slice (opens in a new tab). Digital student cards are free of charge.

For exchange students it is voluntary if they want to join the student union or not. If you have decided not to join the student union and have thus not paid the student union membership fee, you can use Tuudo.

If you have trouble ordering the card, please contact the customer service of the company you are trying to order the student card from. Here you can find frequantly asked questions about the Frank student card (opens in a new tab) and here the Slice student card FAQs (opens in a new tab). NOTE! When making the order, make sure you spell your name exactly as it is written in the student register (you can check the spelling in Peppi). If you use special characters that are not used in Peppi or you do not use special characters although they are used in Peppi, your order might not go through.

If you order a basic plastic student card, you need to collect a term sticker from ISYY’s office (opens in a new tab). Without a valid term sticker on your student card, you are not entitled to discounts and other benefits for students. If you chose the free digital app, you do not need to collect a term sticker.

Student benefits

You are entitled to student benefits starting from the beginning of the academic term on 1 August (in the spring term starting from 1 January).

Meals

Practical advice

  • Always confirm the fare with the driver before starting the journey.
  • Share a taxi with others when possible to reduce costs.
  • Use taxi apps such as Valopilkku to book and compare prices.
  • You can also search online or call taxi companies directly.

Student tutoring

UEF provides each new student, both Finnish and international, with a student tutor. Student tutoring is mainly available at the beginning of the semesters.

If you are an exchange student or a degree-seeking student in a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme, your student tutor will contact you by email a few weeks before the semester begins. Please ensure that you have provided a valid email address that you check regularly.

When your student tutor contacts you, please:

  • reply to confirm that you have received the message, and
  • inform your tutor of your travel plans as soon as your arrival details are known.

What does a student tutor do?

Student tutors are UEF students (both Finnish and international) who have volunteered to support new students. They are not staff members.

Student tutors are trained by UEF to help new students get started with their studies and everyday life in Joensuu or Kuopio. They are also a good source of practical tips related to studying and student life. Please note that tutors have their own duties, studies and schedules, and are therefore not available at all times.

When you have arrived in Finland, you will meet your tutor(s) and other students in your tutoring group. If agreed in advance, your tutor may also meet you upon arrival.

Academic advising

Student tutors do not provide academic advising. For information about courses, study content, or academic requirements, please contact the study coordinator of your degree programme.
